been having some pretty serious white smoke at idle (even when warm) and at low rpm's. sometimes it misses under load as well. and today, it took a loooong time to cool down. by that, i mean about 2 minutes vs. less than 30 sec. the smoke has been going on since i put the cylinder head back on. figure the . 020 over gasket that i put on didn't help anything. it's recently gotten worse though. maybe cuz it was sitting around so much this winter? maybe because it's prolly got over 150k on it? what are the drawbacks to a rebuild? if any. i'm going to need to take it off to have the new pump head put on anyway. or, could this be an injector issue? i cracked the lines one at a time the other day, and on cylinder 4 (and only that one) there was a marked decrease in rpm. all the rest, i could barely tell a difference. anyway, i'd say that's enough ?'s for one evening. thanks guys.

My .02

Dave,

I have to be VERY careful what I say or lest I face the jinx and certain and impending pump failure.

The white smoke... ... . I not"Familiar" with that. Now the p-pump engine do that a lot for me. Not the VE

Missing. I have had mine miss on ocassion, but backed the timing off. Your head gasket will have an effect as you have lowered the Comp ratio. The pulling tractor I used to wrench on would operate like that all the time at idle.

It popped really bad. But once you build 80 psi she runs fine.

My truck takes a looooong time to cool down. Even if I only drive it up the hill three miles to work, I set for about one minute-plus to reach 300.

thanks for the reply scott. the miss i've got is at the top end, and i guess it's more of a "lurch". anyway, when i was warming 'er up this morning with my custom high idle (broom stick), i noticed that the idle speed was fluctuating. kinda like a gasser. it would go up/down about 100 rpm's for 30 secs or so at a time. first time i've noticed it. any thoughts?

dave

Hmmm,,, I dunno but white smoke sounds like low compression,, Id do a compression check before spending money in the wrong place.

No need to worry about a rebuild with only the miles you have oner.

The fluctuating isn't good. Governor problemo most likely. I wouldn't be overly concerned about the miles. Bills pump That I assembled has over 300K I believe. That's a pretty strong pump. Wish I could have benched it to know the specs. You'd ought to have yours tested.

would a gov spring that got stretched out cause that kinda thing? just wondering because she's been acting a little weird since i ground the afc lever. when i pulled the pump top, i thought i was being a little harsh on that spring.
