yesterday the truck started sounding loud, like in between 2nd & 3rd gen. it sounds like a gasser with a bad spark knock is the best i can descibe until you load the engine and then its quiet. just changed fuel filter this am and i bumped the key to let the lift pump cycle, after it stopped there is a ticking noise so i got up on the bumper and listened close and it sounds like one of the injecter solinoids ticking but only one? took for a spin and its the same. put truck in park and walk rpms up slow and i have a bigtime lope @ 13-1400 rpms like i have a dead clylinder.

what do you guys think? bad injector? TIA

Could be some dirt got moved through to the common rail after you changed the filter and lodged itself in one of the injectors. Perhaps as you use it it will clear up or maybe adding an additive for a bit will help. Just a suggestion.

it was doing before the filter swap, but i thought id eliminate the filter even though i had good pressure(guage). if i get a minute i'm gonna stop by dealer and have tech do an individual cyclender shut down @1300 rpms and see if we can pinpoint it that way.

I have a friend that is the diesel guy at the local dealership and he has done over 12 short blocks for these injectors sticking open. They melt the piston. Don't drive it until it gets fixed!!!

One way of fixing them is they have a cap that you can put on the rail to keep fuel from spraying every where when there is not a line on it when the motor is running. The tech keeps moving the cap down the rail until the lope stops. Process of elimination.

So , when is a service bulliten going to come out or is there something out already ? I know its not a safety isssue , but it must be into some big bucks by now ! BTW , I have a slight lope at idle / light knock at mid range and a healthy rattle or detonation sound at all part throttle operation. I am finding another dealer as my usual one is saying "THATS A NORMAL DIESEL SOUND" and I don't have any motivation to get in a told you so situation at the expense of my engine !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I asked my dealer about a sound/feeling while I drive on the highway. At 70mph... It almost feels like a lifter tap from a gasser. It isn't consistant with hearing it on all cylinders. So I wondered if I had a miss in one of the cylinders.

Dealer said it was "NORMAL"

But while driving... I can feel the light ticking in my foot on the pedal. Any ideas if this could be an injector issue... Truck always seems plenty strong.

talked to tech last night and he said to bring back in a. m. for cyl. shutdown test, o. k. . get in the truck this a. m. and its fine!!! went down and told him to forget it for now, put over a 100 mi on it today and its still fine. i still think one of the inj. soloniods was acting up. i kow its not much of an update

My knock is like this. It gets very bad, then suddenly it disappears literally overnight. Stays away for a few weeks, then comes roaring back again. Done this since new. Asked the dealer about it once... "it's normal".
