Ok, you all remember the knocking noise I thought I had. Well, this morning I went to the bank. While sitting at the drive-up window, I could hear it - echoing off of the brick wall. I went from there to the diesel shop and had them listen to it. The guy took a stethescope thing that had a rod sticking out of it, put the end of the rod on the injector and listen to each one. He said they should have a 'sharp' sound to them, and two of them were 'soft' sounding, and that was not good.
I pulled them and dropped them off. They disassembled a couple to see why they were acting 'strange' when they tested them. They are scored/scratched up on the inside. 560. 00 to repair them. They're going to put them back together, so I can at least move the truck.
I guess it's better than having some kind of mechanical problem, but I can hear the money sinkhole opening up already...

At the price quoted, why not just get a new set with the improved spray patterns?

If they install new nozzles though, they should be the same as new.

New injectors... I know I can get them for less than the shop wants for the nozzles. So the truck will sit for the rest of the summer  I've only had the thing for a few weeks and it's going to be an expensive summer lawn ornament. .

scored / scratched inside

Sounds like someone put them in with less than clean conditions. I killed a set about forty years ago in a crawler with less than clean working conditions. Made a beliver out of me. Did you say they were low time? Unusual to be scored if they were kept clean with clean fuel. Injectors want clean clean clean feeding.

They weren't in use very long before I bought the truck. When I did the head gasket, I put caps on them, and made sure it was really clean when I reassembled it. I'm very careful about things like that.
The shop said 2 of them were really bad. I had to put them back in (so I could use the garage) and I know for sure that's what was causing the knock - it was #6 before, it's #2 now, I purposely put the injectors in different holes.
When I took the lines off the first time, I noticed there was anti-sieze on the threads (yes, the threads that the fuel line attaches to), perhaps they got some of that inside them. I cleaned it off real good before I put it back together, but maybe the damage was done already?

Man, too bad about your PODs. I'd almost bet a set of them that the anti-seize is what caused them to score up like they did, or at least that it didnt help. BUT, the good news is that you know what the problem is, and have a few offers for stockers to get you rolling again. I'd give you mine if I had 'em, but you have 7mm holes, and I turned mine back in for a core charge (EDMs- new tips and relevant internals, old bodies). If you want, I can call a guy in Sikeston Monday and see what he'd charge to redo a set of PODs. PM me the numbers. I guarantee you even if you have to get all 6 new tips, it wont be half what that shop wants. Heck, you can even get new PODs, matched and balanced, from several TDR vendors/ sponsors for under$500. Hey, you could get a new set, then sell the ones you have as a set for a 4cyl in a Jeep or some such conversion. :D
