I hope things go well for Greg, Doughboy. My wife and I, and all of our extended family are the national bone marrow donor registry, we signed up several years ago when a family member had to have one. I urge everyone to sign up for it, it takes only a simple blood test and if you match someone you could help save their life.

There a couple of things I can offer up that may be of use. First, it is possible that he could find a clinical transplant trial going on at one of the major hospitals (MD Anderson, Sloan-Kettering etc) which would provide a transplant at much reduced cost. Some of those hospitals have charitable assistance as well. Find one that specializes in the type of transplant he needs, then contact the hospital and find out if there is any way to get the transplant done NOW with a group of his friends and family pledging that the balance will be paid out over time. Groups of people stand surety in this manner to build churches and such, with a few dozen people the cost can be manageable.

The second point to consider: some hospitals do not keep bone marrow transplant patients in full isolation anymore. I'd recommend finding one that DOES keep 'em in isolation. Why? Because even though people like the idea of being able to have their family members visit them, while their immune system is wiped out during the transplant they are incredibly vulnerable to infection. Our family member died from his transplant - NOT because of transplant rejection issues, but because he caught a fungal infection called aspergilla that attacked his lungs and heart and killed him. It turns out that aspergilla is spread by contact with pigeon droppings, Had he been in an isolation room with filtered air, he might not have suffered the fungal infection. There is no way to tell for sure, but an isolation room must improve the odds a bit.

I hope things go well for your buddy doughboy...
