Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Bad Noise

Can anyone tell me if there is anything on the 24v Cummins that can produce a loud knocking other than a rod bearing gone bad.

Here's a little background. The truck is a 99. 5 3500 that just turned 40K miles. While waiting to fuel, idling in line, my foot slipped off the clutch, immediatly and harshly bringing the engine to an abrupt stop, as my other foot was firmly on the brake. When restarted the engine everything sounded fine, but after driving about 5 miles, a light tapping started, quickly turning to a knock.

Hoping it's some cheap and easy to replace external part causing the noise, but it's probably time to drop the pan.



If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them.

I would check out the clutch before I start pulling oil pans..... seems unlikely you could hurt the engine by stalling it at idle.

That was one of my first thoughts. I had a friend give it a listen a few minutes ago. He hears it coming from the top end, and thinks it might be fuel related, maybe a bad or loose injector.

An injector hanging will cause a knock almost like a rod bearing. Might try dosing it heavy with PS and 2 stroke oil after running some cleaner thru it and letting it sit overnight.

Bruce this is a strange one. Is the sound there idling in neutral, does it make a difference if the clutch is pushed in or not? Does it get louder under load? I have a hard time picturing how the engine could be damaged stopping it abruptly. Maybe it snapped a couple of the flywheel bolts or loosened the flywheel. Did your friend listen from under the truck around the transmission?
