Found out yesterday that my pop off valve is bad and am wondering if i should put a new one on or cap it like some of you have? is it o. k. to cap it with a stock cp3 and a rail pressure box? what about blowing the injectors?

i hate to blow things apart but also hate to put a new valve on and pop it in a couple days also. would like some experienced input.

also could one of you guys with the modded cp3's p. m. me with prices, thanks AL.

My opnion is to replace with a stock one and change your box setup. BDDL+TQ dog means your pushing some high PSI in the rail I bet (maybe high the stock one broke).

There will be companies that come out with modified Relief Valves soon.

DON M had a thread on NW bombers about what top much pressure does to an injector... I'll see if I can find it

I'm pretty sure i popped it with just the torque dog over a year ago cuase thats the only time the rail pressure too high code popped up (p 0088? i think)

and power has never been the same. no one seemed to know how to check one on here so i asked the tech the other day and said to remove the banjo bolt on the rail and there should be no fuel coming @ idle until theres like 12k psi in the rail and then it will begin to seep ever so slightly. at idle i'm right at 6k psi and it just pours out, if i would have brought it up to 12k it would shoot higher than my hood.

as far as being stacked, i have a 04 (non 600) so i dont think the extreme mode does rail pressure until you get to Crazy Larry program witch is not avail. for 30-04 trucks yet.

Mine did the same when the relief valve blew. I attribute the root cause to when I was running the BDDL on extreme and the VA on 100% (pure pressure stacked onto combination of pressure/timing/duration) followed by switching to bigger injectors + pressure boxes (CP3 "working" that much harder to maintain rail pressure demands).

I think it's not only normal for some fuel to flow through the relief valve but that a large amount normally flows through it. Why? If you take off its banjo bolt you'll find it's bigger and has larger holes to (presumably) flow more fuel than the banjo bolts anyplace else in the fuel system. Whenever you take one loose there's fuel present too.

If it's the original BDDL power pup, and not the triple dog, the extreme mode does raise the rail pressure.

for some reason the p-pup on extreme would not work in my truck so i just ran the perf mode until dec. when i upgraded to tri-dog cuase the shop told me i could get crazy larry, well after they swap outlooks and try to put in crazy larry they say OH its an 04 and cant do it,,,yet. ive had the torque dog on since new 70k mi ago.

The proper way to test it is to install Miller special tool 9013 and check for flow out the hose. There should never be any flow except when the rail pressure goes maximum. You can just remove the banjo but if it's leaking it will make a big mess.

The test says to actuate the pump for maximum pressure (26,831) and no fuel should flow from the valve. If any fuel flows, replace the valve.

You already know what I am going to ask:

How does one actuate the pump? (without running it on a dyno)

pull the FCA on the back of the cp3 and punch the peddle to the floor/w DRB and get your reading, if any fuel comes out its bad. you should have known that tom :-laf :-laf :-laf

Why do you think Cummins installs a larger, higher capacity banjo bolt on the output if you should never see fuel there? (not arguing, just curious)

hahaha, I DID do that once cause my tech said it was the way test the FCA... (and it like pulses the rail at 30k psi plus.

It sounds like a 12valve with 60* timing. not good, my relief valve was very hot to the touch from it opening and closing so darn fast. Needless to say I dont recommend ANYONE using that method to actuate the CP3!

hey tom all that does is allows the cp3 to see full amount of fuel electronically---no hold back, thats why it sounds different, but effective to use---seldom :-laf
