I searched alot but gave up finding the definite answer I needed. So here goes. Bad tach, comes and goes, bad performance, yada, yada, yada. My 2001 has a manufacter date of 7-00. I have two sensors in question. One below vp-44 and one below lift pump. Which is the culprit? The list of malfunctions is getting longer and longer.

When my tach quit, several of the lights illuminated - including the engine one.

Poor performance (like a vacume line disconnected in a gas motor).

Turned out to be a Cam Position Sensor.

Try a search in the CPS area here.

2001? Yep I would say Cam as the 01's have not a crank sensor. It's got to be one of the most fun things you can do. Step 1 is to shatter your wrist so it can bend in ways the unbroken one can't LOL!
