Just pulled in the driveway after about a 30 mile trip out of town. Got out of truck walked to mailbox and left it running to cool down. I then notice a bad ticking sound. I can usually hear a light ticking noise from drivers door of truck, but it never alarmed me before. this tick/knock is alot louder, and not normal diesel noise. I got underneath and listened, and pinpointed it down to flywheel are. now i did replace clutch recently but i know thats not the problem. I also noticed a hint of engine oil on the bell housing bottom. I do notice that at around 2300 rpm (roughly) that there is a sort of heavy knocking (bottom end), but its not really heavy and its been there since I bought the truck in june. Also this is a twelve valve cummins. Down to brass tacks. I have heard of rear thrust bearing failure, the heavy rear end tick/light knock really has me concerned. This truck is sitting in my driveway, and I am going nowhere until I get an answer from you all. What do you suggest. This is my only vehicle. how easy is it to pull pan? Really Need help.

Unfortunatly pulling the pan is NOT an easy task. You have to lift the motor quite a bit to get enough clearance to do it.

I have a similar noise comming from mine. At idle it's a single knock, drop it in gear (auto) and it's a double nock.

I'm pulling the engine on mine... probably this week.

I was not thinking earlier, I just checked end play and its between 16th and 32nd of inch. Really not sure what is going on here. Could the rear seal or housing assembly cause this noise. Restarted truck and I could hear the noise just periodicly.

Help

With the exception of Josh Peters, I am really not impressed with this 911 forum. Thanks for your help Josh, looks like I will try to do a little more checking and then if I have to pull engine its going to be totaly rebuilt. I will be doing it today. 2/14/06

you're only gonna get responses from guys who think they have had a similar problem--and a ticking sound is pretty vague---have you adjusted the valves??? something to consider----chris

When a 12 valve lift pump spring starts to get weak there is a ticking sound. Is your's the original? Mine lasted 360k before it started to tick noticably, but 200 k isn't uncommon and I'm sure some have quit even at your low mileage. My original water pump quit at 156 and the replacement has lasted 258 so far. Have you checked fuel pressure?

My motor knocks a bit. I haven't found metal in the oil and it hasn't gotten better or worse, so I just ignore it. I figure one day it will get worse if it's a real problem.

It's hard to tell if it's engine knock or just normal diesel noise. Not like on a gasser where it's easy to tell!

Problem Solved

Found the problem. not having any endplay had me stumped. I just repaced lift pump so I was like, Naw cant be that..... rriiight. Yeah it is the lift pump. Orielys auto parts strikes again #@$%! . I am really really tired of replacing parts three and four times. I have since switched to Napa... the lift pump and the track bar are the only parts left that i got from Orielys. both have to be changed. this is insain. :{ . thankfully warranty will cover them both.

Tick or knock?? Big difference and that is why you may have not gotten a lot of responses on your question. It is hard to diagnose a noise long distance and even harder when you are not sure how to describe it to us. Sorry for the low response.
