So I had my truck in for the fuel mileage TSB Flash and while it was there I asked them to check into a knocking sound coming from the front end while in 4 wheel drive. 2200 miles and it's got a bad transfer case. DC is sending up a new one because they want this one to inspect what went wrong. Just thought I'd see if anyone else has had any similar problems.

Nope, seems to be a rare occurance. Did you post about the knocking in 4x4 before, because I seem to remember reading something similar in the last couple of weeks?

I had an issue with my 04. 5 48re quad 600 ho. For the first 1000 miles I kept trying to move the transfer case into 4hi and it wanted to just grind (truck was stoped). Recently it seems to go in fine (8000 miles) What would have caused this?

If you are stopped, it helps to put the trans in neutral. Otherwise, it's best to shift on the fly while letting up on the pedal a little to break some of the torque.

Yep, that's me. Thanks for your recommendations, but it ended up worse than I had thought.

Not The Transfer Case

So, I got a friendly call from the service dept at about 5 pm last night. New transfer case is in and still have a clunking sound when in 4 wheel drive. I think maybe they were just guessing that it was a bad transfer case. Now they said that when they pulled the front diff cover off the fluid was a wierd color and smelled funny. Shouldn't they have checked that first? And doesn't diff fluid always smell funny? I am at my wits end with these mechanics. They have told me that they are not sure what it is and that they are going to try a few different things. Sounds like more guess work to me. Does anyone have any "guesses" of what else would be causing a steady knocking sound coming from the front end while in 4 wheel drive? It is really pronounced when you let off the accelerator and let the slow itself down. Thank you for letting me vent. Have a wonderful Halloween and stay safe.

Guesses? OK, I'd say a bad front U-joint or a bad front-end. The "techs" definitely sound like they are just guessing as well.

Dave

Thanks Dave, you've been a great help. I'm supposed to be headed down the ALCAN on Monday to go to Montana. Guess that trip is going to have to wait. I am really nervous to drive this truck that far after having these techs working on it. Well maybe they will never find it and I can get a new truck. YEAH RIGHT! :-laf

Good luck Brent.

I guess having them properly diagnose the problem is too much to expect from the people that fix vehicles for a living!

If you pass by my area on your way south and are having any trouble, don't hesitate to call (I'm in the Travel Companion).

Cheers,

Dave

Dave, get this, they replaced the front driveline with a new one from a truck on the lot and that wasn't it either! They are just guessing and guessing! I'm not sure what they are going to do next, maybe grease the lug nuts or something?! I would almost bet it is going to be something to do with the pinion like you mentioned in the other post. I will keep you updated. I would love to stop by and visit, if I had a truck that I could drive. Hope your Halloween was fun.
