While replacing the front seals and packing bearings on my 95 2x4 I check my ball joints. They were still tight but the boots on the bottom joints are cracked. I can see no way to repair except replacing them. From what I hear they are a pita to replace. I noticed they are tack welded in a couple of places. Any suggestions.

i used Moog Problem Solver joints on my 99 3500. Took me 3 hours start to finish with hand tools to swap all four. You will need to add a little time to grind the tacks weld you have.

You will need the large ball joint press and adapter set (or some scrap steel tube)

I removed the hub/rotor/spindle/knuckle as an assembly instead of taking it all apart. It was very heavy, but saved a bunch of time.

Guess I have stupid question ...

Are the Moog parts really 3X as good as others, i. e. Raybestos ?

Checking Rock Auto for ball joints, tie rod ends, and an idler arm ;Moog $603. 35 w/ shipping and discount and Raybestos $195. 02 w/ shipping and discount. I am also looking to do this myself. Don't want to waste money, but if Moog is that much better I would be $ ahead.

Thanks for the input.

I just replaced nearly every part of my front end with Moog parts. For a 2WD there is nothing better.

One of the shops I called for a quote for labor (I supplied the parts), said they would only do it if it were Moog parts.

Thanks Guys

Guess I'll save up a few more $ and get the good stuff.

BTW, found the ball joint tool set at Harbor Freight for less than $40, with the correct adapters in the base set.

Like Kenny61 said - lifetime warranty - I'm on my 2nd courtesy Moog - they-re hoping I won't drive too much and break their bank!! Also notice like me Kenny61 is up here in the nertheast where our roads tend to eat ball joints!!

I'm on my third set But I didnt know about the warranty until the last set I put in... . At least the parts store let me warranty out all four even though 2 of em weren't that bad or should i say were still good. I wasnt leaving 2 joints unchanged

Yes but isn't it like shocks - if both are new and one goes bad (defective) replace it - if they're old replace BOTH - I wouldn't wan't mixed vintage ball joints!!.

If they are still tight, just separate the upper and lower arms from the joints and replace the boots. It woult take less than a half hour per side. I would lube it more often and wait for the joint to fail. Then replace the joints, as recommended above. Good luck.
