Ballbearing Turbos?

Love the new Sun Coast transmission

What is the advantage of a ballbearing turbo vs. standard? Doesnt a standard turbo bearings float in the high pressure oil anyway?

disadvantage!! Wait till you have to have the BB turbo rebuilt, you will have to turn all the old balls into $50. 00 dollar bills

"Standard" turbos use journal bearings to support the shaft assy. A ball bearing turbo has significantly less drag (frictional losses) and will spool up much faster. Ball bearing turbos are more susceptible to contaminated oil problems though.

How are the BB and VNT/VGT Garretts in the 6. 0L PSD's holding up?

I haven't heard too much in the way of turbo failures on those engines...

I actually got to take an up-close and personal look at a 6. 0L PSD Garrett turbo... and was able to take the compressor and turbine sections apart. If it weren't for the hydraulic (engine oil) VNT/VGT actuation... I liked the design overall. I still prefer Holset's VNT/VGT mechanism, though... they have a LOT less moving parts than the Garretts...
