Can't figure out how much to adjust on these bands... 72 inch pounds on the wrench then loosening doesn't work, and made another adjustment today slips VERY BAD in 3rd gear up+... . i'm getting sick of this truck's B. S... any serious mechanic's welcome to reply... . should i take it to a pro?

The Bill K. method is to adjust the second gear (front) band to have 1/4" space between the piston and lever when you pull the lever down by hand. It must be done with the pan off and he said to never touch the rear band and I don't know the spec for that. I use a 1/4" allen wrench to measure the gap for the second gear band.

Greg, I haven't got a clue about auto trannies, and I am truly sorry to hear of your problems.

Now, on the lighter side... ... . I'll bet you miss having a real transmission in that new truck, don't ya :-laf :{ (sorry, couldn't resist).

The way I understand the adjustment is that it is really for shift timing not wear. There isn't enuff band to put up with much wear anyway. If the band is too tight there will be a short period of bind where the band and the clutches are both engaged. If it's too loose then there will be a period when neither one is really holding so it will appear as slippage. If I got this wrong someone please chime in.

the real problem

well... i got under there again today:rolleyes: ... adjusted it to right at 1/4'' clearance and sealed it back up and poure 3 1/2 quarts in. . fired it up and NOTHING. . woudn't even get out of first gear:mad: ... i thought it was through..... But i realized it may have been low on fluid. . sure enough 7 1/2 quarts low!:--) i can't figure it out why it was that low... but now luckily it shifts like new againOo. ... TOM GOLDEN: HEHE, i Knew you'd mention the shiftless transmission thing:p ... but who is faster in the 1/4 mile?;) . . anyway, wanted to thank you for the big fat cigar at the NOR-CAL rally. . and all the help you lended me changing the water pump. . mucho appreciated man. . <--and no i don't want your Guiness beer:D :D :p ----Greg
