I,m going to do the maintenance in my truck. and I,m going switch to synthetic fluid.
Q. Do I have take the truck for the bands adjusts or I can change the fluid and filter?
truck had 145. 000 miles auto trany .
My question is becoase I was reading in the manual it need every time you do you maintenance.

Juliomc the transmission bands should be adjusted whenever the fluid and filter are changed. There are two different adjustments, front band and rear band. The front band adjustment screw is on the outside of the transmission drivers side above the manual valve and throllte valve levers. Back the lock nut off 4 or 5 turns, tighten the band adjusting screw to 72 in. lbs. then back off the adjusting screw 2 1/2 turns and lock the nut back down.
The rear band adjustment is located in the bottom of the transmission. With the oil pan and filter removed back off the lock nut 4 or 5 turns tighten the band adjusting screw to 72 in. lbs. then back off the adjusting screw 2 turns and lock the nut back down.
Thats it for band adjustments. The procedure with pictures is in section 21-102 of the factory service manual ( Transmissions in vehicle service)
Good Luck

How critical must one be when performing these band adjustments ?

Ron I have 181,000 miles on my 92 I've adjusted the bands many times. I followed the procedures in the factory service manual and havn't had any problems. The FSM list fluid, filter change and band adjustment as follows.
Light duty use every 37,500 miles
Heavy duty use every 24,000 miles
Servere duty use every 12,000 miles

Geneh,
Are you still running the original transmission? If so then I had better start doing the band ajjustment also! I am on the third transmission with 140,000 miles on the truck.
Can anyone else shed any light on how long the auto's are lasting in thier trucks? Especially when towing trailers around 6000-10000 pounds.

Stan I'm still on the original trans. Do you have an addtional trans mission cooler and trans temp gauge. Heat is the killer of auto transmissions.

GeneH,
I have both the cooler in front of the radiator and the fan assisted cooler under the bed on the drivers side. the fan only comes on when I tow a trailer going up hill on a warm day.
Are you running a synthetic fluid?

I have almost 50k mi. on mine without any problems. I do heavy city driving and intend to tow my trailer (9500lb) more often than the couple times I have in the last year. I did the fluid and bands a while back and is due right now. I also raised the line pressure, which is a good 'ol torqueflite trick and had good results. I am not happy with the shift quality as compared to what a properly set-up transmission can provide, so I am pondering the install of a shift kit.

Hi WayneH: I was reading on the post, that you had raised the line pressure to help the
torque? I don,t have any problems with my , but if is samething to help the transmission
I want to do it.

Wayne,
I also noticed that you had raised line pressure, do you need gauges to measure how much you turn it up or is it just a certain number of turns on a screw? I am going to be installing Transgo TFOD shift kit, AMSOIL synthetic fluid, and my MAG-HYTEC trans pan this weekend and would like any info anyone could give me to make my install easier or better to increase the longevity of my transmission.
Thanks in advance,HAPPY RAMMIN!!!

Raising the line pressure is a simple deal, once the pan is off. Sometimes a Gauge (template) is used to measure the height at a certain point (I have only seen this in a book), but I understand 1/2 turn CClockwise is good enough if the gauge is not available (it was for me). First you need to locate the allen screw in the end of the valve body. It's on the left side up inside past the pan rail. You need to sacrifice an allen wrench (I think 7/32) and shorten the short end to fit up in against the case. Please use a FSM to make sure you're on the right allen screw. the head of the screw kinda sticks out past a tin plate, the screw stays stationary, and jacks a valve inside. I believe the only other screw there is locktited in place DO NOT disturb this one! It's been 2 years since I did this and I haven't had any problems. If a shift kit is going in, there may be special instructions on how to do this to work with their calibration. I was considering the Turbo- action kit. Please respont with the results from other kits. thanks.

WayneM, I recently installed a trans-go shift kit in my 93 350 dually. this was a very difficult installation, the valve body has to be removed from the truck partially disassembled, drilled, springs replaced, line pressure modified, etc. This is not a job for a shadetree mechanic,But the end result was worth the effort. Transmission shifts much better, empty or towing a 10,000 lb trailer. Also my truck would not go into drive after sitting a few days, the new manual control valve fixed this problem. Good Luck.
