What are Symptoms of Lift Pump Failure?

New to diesels, been turning wrenches on gas for awhile. I need to install some guages prior to some mild bombing... what in blazes are banjo bolts. I notice Geno's has some already threaded for installing a fuel pressure guage. Do I just need the one, or should I get the set with wider openings... does this help lube the injector pump? For guages I'm now thinking a Westach combo EGT/boost and a Westach fuel pressure in a piller mount.

Pros and Cons??? Does the Westach fuel pressure guage have a sender, or is diesel under pressure required to be plumbed into the cab? Also, any pros and cons on 1/4 vs 1/8 NPT... and what does NPT stand for??

Thanks in advance

Banjo bolts are hollow baolts that go through the ends of your fuel lines where they enter and exit your fuel filter and injector pump (simplified description). They allow fuel to flow through the bolt. NPT stand for National Pipe Thread. As far as guages, I'm not qualified to comment on the guages you mentioned since I have the Banks guages. I have an Auto Meter Sport-Comp mechanical guage direct plumbed from test port on fuel pump with no isolator. Under presure is only 13-15 lbs. in my truck and you don't have the same hazard exposure like you do with gasoline.

Hope this helps.

Didn't want to make it too complicated since I'm not that knowledgeable.

As an after thought, they are called banjo bolts because the end of the fuel line has the round/flat end with the hole in it and the fuel line comes out the side (so it looks like a banjo:cool: ) and the bolt goes through the banjo. :D :D :D :D

The Westach fuel pressure gauge has a sender that mounts in the engine bay. I like the way it works. Well made and easy to

read at night. .

The now Geno's Banjo Bolts are the original "Ray's" Banjo bolts. They are tapped 1/8" NPT for pressure sender and worked perfect for my SPA installation. I installed a pre-filter and post filter. If you are going the same route, order 5 Banjo bolts with two tapped. These are high quality and I fully recommend them:D

Rodg,

Sorry for the second post, but I just reread your post.

IMHO, there are no better gauges than SPA.

I have the set up you are talking about, the combo gauge and fuel pressure on a pillar mount. Mine is set up with 2 senders, one before the filter and one at the pump with the sender wires going to a switch so you can tell if the lift pump is bad again or if the filter is dirty.

another way to watch fuel pressure

If your poor like some of us, you can get an oil pressure sending unit from a mid 80's GM product (one made for a dummy light). screw it into the fuel pressure port, Wire one side to ground, and the other side to a dummy light mounted in the location of your choice in the cab. The oil pressure senders will turn on the light around 5 psi. I don't care what my fuel pressure is, as long as its above about 5 psi :)

for what they cost, SPA gauges should be good!!! nomally i like digital gauges, but think i'll go with westachs on my new toy. appeal?? boost and EGT in one gauge, dual oil temp in one gauge(oil and transmission) and dual fuel pressure gauges in one gauge. three gauge pillar mount--presto 6 gauges. plan to measure the fuel pressure pre and post transfer/lift pump with an auxillary pusher pump back at the tank. with a separate switch to activate the pusher pump, it should make bleeding the system much easier... ... ..... my. 02 wurth... ...
