I am currently looking at purchasing an exaust brake for my 2002 H. O. diesel. Banks has the exhaust brake with a 4" opening to fit to it's 4" monster exhaust. Since I intent to move to the bigger exhaust, it would seem foolish to purchase a 3" brake. Banks seem rather expensive. Is it worth the price? I have heard a lot of good things about Banks.

Hey Bud, glad to have ya here!

I use a BD 4" remote Exhaust brake and have been nothing but happy with it. Don't get a 3" if soon you are getting an exhaust system.

I have that combo it works well but because the brake bolts directly to the turbo i now feel limited for options for a turbo upgrade. i may be wrong as i have yet to do a complete search on what is available to me without changing brakes. It is a costly combo but that is all hindsight :{

Have any of you installed these yourselves?

Did you compare the differences between Banks and BD? If so, what made you decide to go with the brand that you did?

Bud i did my own install for the ex & brake everything was straight forward. I did the monster ex first and just snugged the clamp for the down-pipe. then a few months later put the brake on had no trouble getting the down-pipe back off. I did not use that computer thing banks sends with the brake just activated the vacuum solenoid with an Eaton fuller gearshift knob that i reworked for electric. I didn't really compare other manufactures when i bought it i will say it has performed flawlessly. I choose banks mainly for ease of installation however at the time i knew nothing about the TDR or alot of other companies that sell diesel accessories

I installed a Banks Brake & Monster exhust the day befor yesterday on my '01. It was harder removing the old parts than installing the new ones. The thing works really well! I don't even notice a change in exhaust noise from the cab with the straight through muffler. There is a slight change of tone when the brake comes on. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to any one. I got a really attractive price from Torque& Chrome of Houston.

I have the Banks monster exhaust with the power elbow. The power elbow is the exhaust brake without the brake inside. While on vacation in Alabama I stopped in at City Diesel and picked up a Dodgzilla turbo minus the turbo housing. I bolted it up in about an hour and it worked like a champ. I didn't have to remove anything except the turbo and compressor. The turbo housing stayed bolted up to the exhaust manifold and exhaust. I picked up horsepower and it even got about one to one and onehalf miles to the gallon better fuel mileage on my trip back to Indiana towing my 28 ft 5th wheel camper.

I used a Pac brake with the Monster exhaust. I felt the electrical connections with the Banks brake where overly complex for what was achieved. I have the same features as the Banks brake with the factory ECM controlling it. No extra computer to fail. If the Banks computer fails, the truck wont run right unless you plug in the bypass plug that comes with the unit. Banks also uses t taps under the hood which I prefer to avoid. Here's a link (with pictures) to how I did it.

I use a US Gear D'Celerator remote 4" and am totally pleased with it. I use the air option because I don't trust solenoids underneath with water and road grime.
