Anyone out there running a Big Hoss module? I have one on my truck and am curious if anyone can keep there EGT low enough to keep their truck from de-fueling. I am looking into installing a 4" exhaust on mine in hopes of minimizing the de-fueling problem that I am having. The temps rise so fast that I don't get full performance out of it. It has to cool off before it will continue to produce power. I bought the thing before I knew about this site. I would love to change it out with another, but I would have to buy new gauges as well due to the gauges plugging directly int the module. Anyway any info here about this would be great.

Thanks,

Derek B.

What level are you running it on? Mine is in the mail and will be installed within the next week or so I hope. I've herd of people removing the pyro completely and others that put it post turbo to keep them from defueling. It's probably not a good idea, but it should work.

I have a Big Hoss on an 01 6speed with DDII's, 4" exhaust incl Banks Power Elbow, Edge EZ, and a Scotty Air Intake. I have a fairly large choice of reasons to back down before I start to hit EGT's that trigger defueling. My max boost is about 32psi. Only slight haze after stop lights and the like or a heavy foot from trolling speeds.

Supersonic,

Wouldnt that be the same thing as removing the thermocouple so no feedback (temp) gets to the banks box?

JHutton,

Are you really getting any benifit out of the big hoss? I mean with all the other performance mods you have, I would think your truck would perform better without it. Probley would run alot cooler without having to worry about de-fueling.

I am going to remove my big hoss if the 4" exhaust & K&N intake doesnt put a major dent in lowering my EGT. Would a differnt turbo help any?

Another question to anyone else out there? Do any of you run other boxes without having to worry about your EGT's getting over 1300 degrees? If I had an EZ and DDIIs with a 4" exhaust and a K&N intake, how hot would the EGT's get at wide open throttle???

Any help here would be appreciated!

Regarding the Big Hoss, I think there is definate benefit. I upgraded from the Banks Power Pack set up which had the Otto Mind Fueling box. The Big Hoss was the next itineration of the Otto Mind--I guess it's actually a stage 5 Otto Mind vs what was a "stage four". As I understand it Banks finally had the forsight to design in the capacity for upgrades in the future just by software enhancements or changes. I can't imagine it running better without the Big Hoss----it is a fueling box after all. When I did the Banks Power Pack it included a 4" exhaust begining where the downpipe terminated. When I did the Big Hoss change over I did the Power Elbow they had just developed and that included some additional length of 4" exhaust; almost all the way to the turbo outlet except for a cast piece about 15" long which is the "Power Elbow". This cast piece just is a fitting going from 3" at the turbo outlet to 4" at the downpipe. So, the Big Hoss 5 wasn't done alone.

I think I'm in the minority amongst TDR members but I like the Banks system. The Big Hoss 5 wasn't anymore than an Edge Comp or TST and less than the Blue Box UFM. Exhaust Temps pre turbo aren't any problem for me.

JHutton,

May I ask how hot yours gets? If I can get to where I can run at wide open throttle without having to worry about EGT, I would be extreamly happy. My big hoss is only on level 2. 80hp gain. The thing works awesome untill it hits 1300 degrees. I am glad to hear there is hope for mine. I plan on ordering the 4" sometime next month. I have a k&n filter, but plan on changing it out with a full air intake. I added the boost elbow to the wastegate on the turbo. I have never been able to get the boost over 23 psi empty at wide open throttle. Anyway thanks for your replys.

I am not familar with the Big Hoss at all. Does it have a boost fooler built in?? To get more boost you need to have a boost elbow on the turbo and something to fool the ECM. I think you should see more than 23 psi on a truck with any fueling box. If the big hoss does not hook to the MAP sensor in some way then that could be a big part of your problem.

I just installed mine last night. The Big Hoss hooks to the TPS,MAP sensor and the VP-44. Today, I haven't been able to get more than 19PSI at WOT. It made a huge difference in performance.

No, everything is stock on my truck but I plan to continue bombing my rig as I have the available cashflow! Since I installed it, I've only been able to do a few WOT runs and at 100 MPH the EGT's were only 1050F.

I managed to de-fuel it today on a long flat. While going about 45 MPH in 6th, I rugged it. As I approached 90MPH it felt like I let off the pedal and re-rugged it over and over. Now I know what you mean by de-fueling, it's not suttle but drastic! Then I tried the same run in 5th and it did not de-feul. I'm still happy with the upgrade as I don't go that fast very often, but how is it going to perform when towing? My trailer has alot of wind drag so it may be a problem? I Guess that means a new airbox and exhaust should be on the priority list!!!!!!

I run a Big Hoss 5 which is not something I can locate anymore on the Banks Web Page. Their newly offered Big Hoss doen't tap the pump wire which the Big Hoss 5 did as did the Ottomind in the performance packages. I've e-mailed them for some clarification and I'll go on record as saying I'll be surprised and impressed if informative remarks are forthcoming! I can hit 1350 pre turbo but of course, with Banks, no higher because of their built in software which defuels. I think my general max boost is 30-32 psi; I really don't push it that hard very often so it might be a little higher. I don't tow or race so I almost never am up against the EGT wall.

JHutton,

I have never had any luck with them responding to an email. Good luck! If you get any info on that big hoss pump tappless version, I wouldnt mind hearing about it and what the main differences are. I have an auto in mine and may be feeling the drop off more than your six speed. I did notice a big improvement over stock, I just want to rid myself of the defueling problem.

DirtyDodge,

It sounds like you may be having two defueling issues. If you are only seeing 23 psi (21 is the ECM cutback on press) you are probably coming up against both the ECM cut back and the BIG Hoss cut back.

So when you get to 23 psi do you see an big jump in EGT right there?? Do you have any codes set on your truck?? Cycle the the key to the on positon three times and leave it on the third time. Watch the odometer window and see what you get. I bet you have an overboost code.

Something else you can do is clean and check the connections on the Map sensor. Put a little dielectric greese on the connection too.

As for a 4 inch exhaust helping your EGT's, I would not count on it. It really is not necessary unless you are pushing a bunch more HP. Try going to a straight pipe (remove muffler) first. You can get just about any muffler shop to do that for $100.

JR2

The same de-fueling thing happened to me today @90MPH again. I'm starting to think it's a speed limiter because the EGT's were only 800F. Can you go faster than 90MPH with this box, and can you remove this annoyance?

Banks Big Hoss and fuel mileage?

Just wanted to know if anyone has noticed any increase in fuel mileage with the Banks Big Hoss installed? I am sure you are looking for more power and do not mind a drop in fuel mileage. When you change the fuel timing and fuel delivery curve mileage should increase that is if you can keep your foot out of it! Ha!! LOL Thanks!

Cameron,

I have hit 110 mph. At about 90 mph the egt are pegged for a few seconds. They start to drop and the power kickes back in. Summit sells a 4" exhaust for $299. I figure I will start there.

JR2, I don't see any codes. The EGT peggs fast, proportional to the boost. floor the pedal, boost increases, along with EGT. I think the thing is working the way it was designed, I just need to start increasing my airflow to start. I appreciate the help though.

Race 427, I can't tell you to be honest if I am getting any better milage. I put mine on in the spring around 15,000 miles. The thing was getting an average of 14 mpg when new and in the winter on stock tires. I average 17+ now with 285's. Was it due to the box or due to it breaking in with better wheather, who knows.

Update on Banks; Not only did they respond to my E-mail, but called me as well to dicuss performance topics. Impressive. I'm going to put some EDM's in the equation.
