It looks like Banks is going to use the new motor in the sidewinder project. Cummins code name "Salt Quake" I thought he was going to be using the ISB, but I quess he changed his mind...

It will come from Cummins with 393 hp and 600 ft torque. Why don't they put that engine in the new trucks.

Because of one of those three letter words - EPA!! If you look at it, it is the new common rail engine. However it looks like it is the medium duty or marine version of the engine because it has an HX40 turbo on it. The packaging is so tight on the new truck there's no way they could have put an HX40 on it. When I was at the press intro the beginning of this year I talked with the cummins engineers that were there and asked why they have the HY35 on it. First answer was concerns about spool up. Then later they mentioned the tight packaging and that there's 30% less underhood space. I looked closely and there's only about 3/4" of space between the compressor side of the turbo and the shock mount. They didn't say that packaging was the reason for the HY but I deduced it out of what they said and what I was looking at.

Cummins 600???

Just like many others, I'm anxiously awaiting more info on the Cummins 600 or it would be even nicer if one would just show up at a local dealer. I came across this post and wondered might this have been a prototype for the new engine? The torque and hp seem to be quite similar to the initial estimates. Click on the Banks link from the first post and take a look for yourself.
