What is the Cummins number for the barring tool for our engine ! It really makes it handy for turning it over. #ad

Rockymnt,
Bought mine from the local Cummins dealer and it is KD 3824 (from KD tools I believe). Save yourself some money and use a socket on the nut for the alternator pulley, turn one way and the belt slips, turn the other direction and it will turn over the engine. Works better than the barring tool and is a lot easier to get at. #ad

Use a 22 milimeter socket on the alternator pully nut. Standing in front of the engine rotate it to the right or clockwise. If you turn it to the left the belt will just slip. works real good when you are adjusting the valves. Much cheaper than buying the barring tool. My 02$ worth.

Cummins # 3824591, you might also try miller spx(DC tool provider), they are sometimes a little cheaper.

I have a Miller SPX timing kit. . you will also need about four 1/2 drive by 10-12" extensions and one 1/2" drive universal (attached to the barring tool on the bell housing). This allows you to attach your 1/2 drive rachet just above the altenator (sp).

Snap on also sells one, YA9565, but a 3/8 drive and $50 +/-.

If you are merely adjusting valves the 22mm is ok, if your are timing etc. it is nice to barr the engine either way.

Its also a sturdy holder to prevent engine rotation when re-tightening the injection pump gear nuts 144 lb. ft. or some use more torque. . not greater than 160 lb. ft.

Good luck and happy barring. .

Woo Hoo, Thanks for all the great help ! I had tried the socket on the alternator but it kept slipping the belt. #ad
I didn't know you could do it the other way though. Now I know this, it will make it soooo much easier #ad
