I had posed a question about a transmission noise. I was told that the noise was "barking the turbo".

Can anyone explain what that is?

"Barking" the turbo is technically stalling the compressor of the turbo or compressor surge. I'm not realy knowledgable on the subject, but I think it has something to do with drive pressure being lower than manifold pressure, and the air actually moves in reverse in the manifold, charge air cooler, and turbo charger causing the noise.

I've heard several different stories on whenther or not it is bad for the turbo - And you could find more information on this on the Holset web site.

Barking the Turbo is DEFINITELY bad. One post had it almost perfectly. The barking comes from the turbo being forced to spin in the opposite direction. This happens when your boost pressure is high and you suddenly let off the throttle. Teh pressure in the intake has no place to go but up the intake. The manifold pressure forces the turbo to spin backwards almost instantaineously. The turbo cannot deal with this , design wise, and may possible break the shaft the goes from the exhaust side to the compressor side.
