Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Barring engine over

I read of barring the engine and have found the OTC tool for that purpose. Is there an alternative that is effective, or is it too hard to turn?

Most of us use the nut on the front of the alternator. It's surprisingly easy to turn over by hand.

x2 on the alternator nut.

Cummins makes a barring tool ,I have one you also need a very long extension . Many people use the 22nmm nut on the alternator.

Regarding the alternator nut, I am happy to use that method. I would have thought the belt would slip and not turn the engine [particularly considering the compression of the diesel], however, had I ever considered it.
