Is the only place to get a barring tool is Mac, Snap-on, or Miller. Would you be able to get it from Napa or a local parts store

There is a difference! My Snap-on has a collar that sits in the hole and the actual gear rotates without spinning that collar. The Cummins tool is just a piece of steel that looks the same, but does not have the rotating collar. I've used both... . Mine rotates a bit easier. I can actually turn it over with one hand over the head of the ratchet. The other one had just enough extra drag that I needed 2 hands.

Just my . 02

With all my valve adjustments and timing jobs on 12-valves I've learned to get along without it, but I used to have one and lost the darned thing. . . so irritating! It was in a kit I won at Timberline Dodge in 2000.

The Snap-On Part number is YA9565A. Took my Snap-On guy a week to find it. He priced it to me around $50.

For most jobs you can rotate the motor using the nut on the alternator. It only works good one direction, but that is fine for valve adjustments.

I got mine with a timing kit from Miller. Very nice tool to have. I was going to buy one anyway until I found out that it came with the kit. In addition to turning the engine it will hold the engine while you torgue up things like the vibration damper. You can't turn the engine with the alternator pully if the belt is not on. It's certainly worth the cost of the tool.
