Basic question on boost foolers

I am considering 275 injectors on a stock 2002 HO . I have read that a boost fooler is needed with them [on a TDR forum] If I have read this correctly, a fueling box has a ''built in'' boost fooler , but I have also read about ''stand alone'' boost foolers.

My basic questions are these. 1. Does a stand alone boost fooler increase the air into the engine? 2. Does it reduce EGT's ? 3. Does a fueling box ''fool boost'' by not letting the ECM see the true boost? 4. How does a stand alone boost fooler differ in operation from a fueling box?

I know this is a lot to answer , but searching was not successful for me. Just tell me where to look if it takes too long to explain. Thanks
 
Boost Fooler = product that plugs into the map circuit that shows the computer a boost no higher than 19-20 psi, regardless of the actual pressure in the intake manifold. Used to prevent overboost code. Products that show a constant 19 psi also 'remove' the boost variable from the fueling curve. This means that you can get full fuel at low boost, albeit at a stock level.



Boost over 20ish psi will set an 'overboost' code in the computer.



You need a boost fooler to blind the computer if you remove/incapacitate the boost elbow on the turbo allowing boost pressures over 20ish psi. You also need a boost fooler if your fueling level will create enough boost to override the boost elbow. I think this is about DD3 level or higher injector.



275's on an otherwise stock truck won't override the stock boost elbow. Therefore, you don't NEED one. If you got one anyway, and it showed the computer a constant 20psi, you would see the benefit of full stock fuel available at any actual boost level.



That being said, I'll answer your questions:

1. Does a stand alone boost fooler increase the air into the engine?

No and yes. It can allow more air sooner by allowing full stock fueling, which theoretically can spin the turbo sooner, but that is not its function.



2. Does it reduce EGT's ?

No, if anything it would increase them. That is why the stock fueling curves have boost as a variable. Low boost + high fuel = high egt. To see the added benefit of reduced egt, you would have to modify the wastegate/boost elbow to allow the turbo to make more than 20psi.



3. Does a fueling box ''fool boost'' by not letting the ECM see the true boost?

I know the Edge EZ and Comp have built in boost foolers. I don't know about other products. I think the TST doesn't have a boost fooler, that is why many use them with the EZ.



4. How does a stand alone boost fooler differ in operation from a fueling box?

A standalone fooler shows the computer no boost value over 19-20 psi. That is its only function. It allows for a modified/disabled boost elbow or wastegate to be installed. These will allow the boost to go over the factory limited 20 psi. A fueling box changes the amount of fuel the fuel pump sends to the injectors. It may or may not have a built in boost fooler.

Thanks for such a great explanation. I have been reading about . 22 shell methods and turnbuckle methods to increase boost-- did not wish to have EGT's go too high. doing this without boost fooler could set codes. It looks like smart way to go is gauges first. Then if 275's builds boost too high to 20 psi, it is time for an EZ on mild setting. I do not drive this rig hard, just lookin for a little more oomph between 1500 and 2000 RPM
