On my '97 there appears to some kind of switch in the bottom of the battery tray. The switch is depressed by the weight of the battery. What is it's purpose #ad

Rebel, There is a temperature sender under the battery tray that sends a signal to the PCM to vary the rate of charge depending on the battery temp. Things aren't as simple as they used to be.

Yes illflem right. It is the battery temp sensor and if it goes bad ( bad connection, shorted wires... ) Your alternator(generator) will not charge, your EVR(in the computer) needs reading from this and the line voltage to tell the alternator to charge.
