Guess I'll admit my mistake first- I was working around the house working on about 10 projects at the same time last night. Somehow, I left the keys in my truck with the ignition turned on but the engine off. (It's a low crime area around here) Anyway, around noon the next day-today, wife went to use the truck and of course it was dead. I could'nt even blame it on something else because my keys were hanging in the ignition-BUSTED! I charged the batteries slowly with my charger and got it running. When I turned it on all of the guages went biserko but settled down except for the engine fault light. I took it on a run up the highway but the engine light is still on. The voltmeter shows about 13 volts but engine fault light light stays on even after a second start. Is there a way to get rid of that or do I have to take it to a dealer?

I know, I know... ..... just help me get out of this mess, will ya?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

May just be a bad battery, if so you need to replace both at the same time. Also might be the alternator, if the alternator is working and the battery is bad the alternator is probably getting pretty hot. I think the check engine light will reset after problem is corrected and truck makes several start cycles, the code will stay in the computer though. I would go to an auto parts store and let them read the codes and check the battery/charging system. It's usually free and most seem glad to do it. bgtee

Give it about 10 starts. Mine did the same thing after disconnecting the batteries for the Ebrake install. Had it checked by a Smarty about 2wks later. No codes found.

Might be a P0192 Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Low code, this will trigger the CEL. Happened on my 06 when I left the key on a bit to long before starting. The CEL went off after about 10 start/stop cycles.

my truck has been hiding from local and state law enforcement at a buddys house for a few weeks after a people starting running their mouths. I had to disconnect the battery then later reconnected it right before I drove the truck 2 miles home. I simply pushed the neg. batt terminals onto the post, left them loose, fired the truck up and went home, the drive home was a quickie but the truck run like crap along with MIL light came on. I knew the the problem was the battery connectors cuz I experienced before. my codes were: rail pressure related, something PPE didnt give description for and CKS sensor. but she was missing like crazy and doing all sorts of crazy crap and would barely run let alone pull itself. got home 13mm on 1/2"nuts on battery terminals and cleared codes with PPE. she was fine after that. even did donuts in the backyard cuz I was having a bad day, she run like a cummins should after I tighten them connectors. you may try pinchin your connectors so the are egg shaped slightly and knockin them on with the handle end of the hammer to make them contact better.

I have had the same thing happen after leaving the ignition switch in the "on" position to long, not the "acc" position. The truck threw a code, but could not read it doing the ignition cycle to display on the odometer. Nor would my OBII scanner read any codes, just faulted (i did not have a SMARTY at that time). After about 10 heat cycles it went away (from cold to running temp and back down).

I'd like to hear this whole story!

Ok, thanks. Will do the 10 cycles and see if it clears. Thanks for all of the responses. Will let you know how it turned out.
