On a short drive home the other day my volt meter dropped to 0 and the "check guages" light came on. When I opened the hood I noticed some fluid on top of the passenger side battery and a slight hissing noise. Reading the manual I thought there might be a over charging issue. The next day I drove the truck about 10 miles. The volt meter read on the low side of normal for a few miles then dropped to 0 again. When I opened the hood after the 10 mile trip, I saw the sight glass in the passenger side battery blew right out of the battery and there was spray all over the engine compartment. I replaced both batteries that day, thinking this was going to slove the roblem. The next day driving to work the volt meter again read low and dropped to zero after a few miles. I disconnected the negative lead from the passenger battery and now the volt meter reads fine. I'm wondering if I have a faulty voltage regulator. If so, my manual says its an intergral part of the ECM. I did a search but couldn't find a post of a similar issue. Can anyone give me a place to look to diagnois this and has anyone else had a similar experience? The truck has 94k the the batteries were original. Thanks in advance.

It's one of the cables that connect the batteries. A poor contact due to corrosion. Voltmeter reads the voltage on the low battery and overcharges the other one and it blows up.

If you don't have time to fix right away, hook up jumper cable between the two batts.
