Getting ready to tow X-country - what to prep?

H2O hoses - flat roll-up kind

Topped up my batteries a few months ago and then this week-end I pulled my TT to Muncie. It has 2 golf cart batteries.

The driver side battery spit acid all over the inside fender and spoted up the outsite fender paint (bubbles), passenger side spilled inside the fender.

First time this ever happened.

These are still OM batteries and were toped up to halfway up the slit but had to bring them down to bottom of slit and still had some leakage on way back. I put a rag over the bats for the trip back.

Wondering if maybe the charging system overcharged or what?

Anyone ever had this happen? thanks

I only ever fill them up to the bottom of the slit. IN the olden days there used to be a ring at the bottom of the slit, as you filled the water it would make a convex when it hit the rings.

See when a battery is low, the level also drops some, fill it up in a discharged state, and the level will rise as you charge it, if you over fill it it will over flow as you charge it.

As long as the plates are under water I will charge the battery then add water up to the bottom of the slits. Then charge it again.

I second that - they should only be filled to the bottom of the slit.

Also check that the caps fit snugly.

Put a good, preferably digital, voltmeter on them while they are charging. They should not get over 14. 0 V at any point. Higher voltage will shorten their life and boil off electrolyte.

PS. Baking soda and water is your best bet for cleaning up.
