I ran a code reader on my truck (2003 2500 with BullyDog) and get a code "P0514 Battery Temperature Sensor Circuit Range/Performance " Does this mean anything. The truck runs fine, batteries seem to be charging is this something that I need to worrie about?

If the batteries get to warm from an over charge the sensor will set this code.

If the sensor fails (common) it will set this code.

I also think there is an update, possible TSB for this problem if an actual failure can not be found. You`ll need to look at TSB`s for truck specific information that pertains to your veh.

There is a flash for this annoying code. I had it done the other day. I got that code a few times; it cleared after a few starts. Then I started getting the CEL on and no code. Apparently, there are more potential codes than what will show on the dash readout. That's why I went in... that little light scares me!

That TSB fixed my Battery Temperature Sensor Low after it appeared 4 or 5 times.

AMink- the CEL scares me too- first saw it at 5am when we were leaving for a 2 day 500 mile round trip with the camper loaded into the bed.

I had bought a handheld scanner and right there I plugged it in, saw that it was the PO514 code. Hey, as long as it was a minor code- no problem- cleared it and the CEL went out. We were on our way. (BTW, the scanner will not let me clear "hard" codes- the real nasty engine stuff- which is a good thing since it keeps someone from using an engine that is about to self-destruct)

The scanner allowed me to know it was OK to used the truck for our trip. If I hadn't had it we probably would have had to change plans. I carry it under the drivers seat- I "don't leave home without it".

Just some advice.

John

Would you please tell me what type and brand of hand held scanner you use?? I have a lit CEL and have not been able to use any of the key on/off methods to determine the reason for the CEL on my 2006. If you can also tell me where you bought it, the model number and approximate cost, that would be great.

Thanks, Chuck

CTRice--when you do the 3 key turn method, do you show some lines then "done"? I was doing it wrong at first. From Lock, turn it one click. From there one click, back, one click, back, and one click. In your odometer area, it should either show a code or some lines, then DONE. Dealer told me I couldn't read codes on an 06. I said, "Yes I can", that's how I know it is the battery code. Apparently, some codes come up, but not others. What a pain!

I have not had anything show up anywhere on my IP. I was however, starting at the position of key insertion to key on three times. Thanks for the advice Mr. Mink. I will try your method and let you know if it works for me.

The three key cycle routine does not work 100% on CAN bus vehicles. The trucks seem to work most of the time, but Jeep and Durango do not always work. My 05 Durango worked only a couple of times, where my 03, 04 and 06 trucks have every time. My 07 Jeep says "DTC Report" in the cluster.

Well guys, I tried the key in to one click then on/back, on/back, on. Didn't show anything. Disconnected the battery again for 20 minutes, reconnected and still had CEL lit.

Out of desparation, I bought a scanner. The codes were "P0191 Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor" (I did just change the fuel filter before this all happened) and "P0111 IAT Sensor" What do these really mean?? I erased them and was finally able to turn out the CEL, but should I be doing anything else about these codes??

Thanks, Chuck

Thanks, I'll keep in mind the flash for the P0191 code if it returns. I'll also check connections near the fuel filter and fuel rail.

What about the P0111 code??

After reading my scanner manual more thoroughly, I discovered that the small symbol appearing after this P0111 code indicated that this code was pending with one occurrence so far. So it seems that the MIL was due to the P0191 code.

I will drive the truck tomorrow and see if the MIL remains dark.

Thanks, Chuck

My '07 with 1500 miles on it had the CEL come on today. Tried the 3 key cycles and was able to get the code. "P0514 Battery Temperature Sensor Circuit Range/Performance ". Obviously the truck has the latest ECM flash. I guess if the light does not go out in the next couple days I will call the dealer.

OBD II AutoScanner

Actron OBD II AutoScanner model #CP9175. I purchased this at Advance Auto just under 200. 00. This unit will hold codes, but this was purchased for use on my wifes car. The unit has alot of readouts that deal with gas engines. It will read your codes and clear them.

Bought an Actro 9145 at Autozone. Cost $199. 99 after $30 rebate. Erased codes and reset CEL. I have asked this on other threads, but does anyone know why disconnecting the batteries does not erase codes and extinguish the CEL?? It always worked on my older Ram trucks.

Thanks,

Chuck

The 191 code can occur if you run the key a lot without actually starting the engine. The IAT sensor is usually from starting the truck without the sensor plugged in. Common mistake after putting a cold air intake on and forgetting to plug it back in before starting it. The other cause may just be a dirty sensor. You may want to take it out and clean it. That is probably why the light stayed on.

The feds stepped in... ... ... ... . to many people erasing codes and not fixing emmissions related failures.

Staarma,

Thanks for the insight. I was using the key on/off, on/off,on/off, on method to try out some gauge hook-ups before the light came on. Also used this method numerous times to try and read codes. CEL has been out since I erased the codes with my scanner three days ago. It's great being part of a knowledgeable group like the TDR.

Thanks Again,

Chuck
