I have read lots of threads about the quality of these kits. Some seemed to leak some didn't. Some said they shifted smooth others didn't. I just wanted to see if the opinions had changed any before I buy one. If you have one would you buy it again for your next truck?? Do they still shift ruff?? Do they still have leak problems???

Thanks in advance,

Scott

I think the leak problem stemmed more for a poor install rather than a mfg problem. I don't have one yet, but I will be trying one.

I believe they changed/revised their gaskets. Check some older posts to confirm. The problem should be fixed, but I haven't heard any recent results. Keep us posted...

Smear lots of RTV on the parts when you re-assemble and you won't have any leaks. There is now also a 'whiplash' shifter out that is nice. I sat in a truck and ran through the gears but did not actually drive it. just another option to think about.

I have inquired about the whiplash. It does position the handle nicely but doesn't do anything to shorten the throws. I actually like my transmission just like it is but if it can be improved why not. Plus since I don't live that close to the whiplash guy he wants a pretty good bit for the shifter if you don't give him your old one. I didn't ask if I could mail it to him for credit back though.

I've read the same about the factory shifter too. My arms my be a little longer than most, but I can hit all but 1st and reverse without removing my elbow from the console with the factory set up. If I want to quick shift, I just grab the shifter rod instead of the shifter knob! The shorter you grab it, the faster she shifts! ;D

BTW, I wouldn't "smear lots of RTV" on anything, but that's me.

What the Shift Kit does/doesn't do

Guys:

I have a BD short-shift kit on my 3500 and like it lots. It does shorten the shift throw (a good thing) but does nothing to improve quality of a hard shifting transmission.

I recommend the kit and would buy it again. You can actually speed shift these raskels.

I am with you on the RTV. A little will do if applied right, But I prefer a new gasket when possible.

That is what I wanted to hear. My transmission shifts smooth right now with an occasional trouble going into reverse. From reading some old post it was made to sound like the BD was causing harder and rougher shifting.

A little more clarification

WHamby:

Some might interpret the shorter throw as harder to get in gear if you have a hard shifting transmission to begin with due to less momentem of the short shifter. Mine occassionally is hard to get into reverse, so I just double-clutch it and slam her in.

I raced a BOMB'd 03 6spd 4X4 a while back and I was already in 5th while he was going into 4th. That short shifter made those speed shifts possible. I was shifting around 2500 RPMs.
