Coming home from work today going up a long grade. An unloaded 18 wheeler is trying to get over to pass some much slower loaded trucks. I flash him to get over and about 100 yards later, His rear tire kicks a rock and put a nice star on my windshield. I flag him over and get info from him and call his employer. He says that he is not responsible for stuff thrown up from the road. My ins co said the same. I have $250. 00 ded on comp:mad:.

Any suggestions on the best way to get a new glass replaced without the guys screwing up my truck. I don't want some dummy scraping the old glue out of the body with a metal spatula and then getting rust out later.

Has any of you got a new O. E. glass from the dealer?

Chris

If you can cover the crack with a dollar bill most glass replacement companies can repair your window to new condition for very little $$. My insurance company covers the cost of this type of repair. I have $500 deductable.

Pit Bull is right...

I had a small crack repaired on a car once. It turned out very well, and my insurance co. covered the whole thing - no deduct. My deduct. was $100. at the time - if I would have had it replaced. It was my choice on which way to go.

It's True!

Howdy Chris,

Hope yer doin O. K.

Leo Deroucher(How the *ell is that spelled)was right "Nice guys finish last". The last time I stopped to let some one in the guy behind me hit my truck in the ass. Sorry to see you get bit.

Take care my friend

Interesting, as my insurance co. says there is no deductable for windshields. If it is cracked, go get it replaced.

Country Companies.

Finally replaced my windshield. Had lots of cracks, none in my vision line. Glass was just too pitted to be able to see comfortably in rain etc. Was $275 Canadian for a new one at a national franchise installer. I don't have windshield coverage, just the other glass.

With the extra cost to cover your windshield and how often you replace it, it is likely not cost effective. This is particularly true if you have to pay a deductible. Chances are your easily paying 2 or 3 times the cost of a new windshield over time.

My suggestion, lose the windshield coverage and use the money saved to cover the cost of being a nice guy.

Re: Be a courteous driver and what do you get...

Yea, I don’t know, but being courteous and “smokin’ em” don’t seem to be too complimentary. Of course, I never do that, but to be honest, when I read some stories about smoke, it makes me smile… LOL. :D (I guess some just beg for some smoke) I think courtesy has it’s own reward that’s worth more than a few bucks. :) But then again, my opinion is worth far less, about $. 02 worth. Hope the glass doesn’t cost you too much. What does $275 Canadian translate to in US dollars? Not too bad.

A couple of things of interest: Lowering you deductible on Comp normally does not change your insurance rates much. compared to collision.

I know it does not help now. But something to think about for the future.

Also, you can get a rider for glass with a zero deductible or some other small $ deductible. This normally amounts to <$20/year.

So I appluad your courtesy! Please keep it up. Driving would be easier if we were all a little more courtious.

One other thing that I learned is that a comp claim normally does not affect your next years rates. I had a person get into my rear duals and bumper. Totaled their car. Right after that I got the windshield broke from a rock off a truck. I was really worried about my rates going up. My insurance broker said don't be. The comp claim was not a problem because there were not possibly of injuries from other people. The insurance companies are really worried about being sued with in the satuate of limitations. Normally a comp claim precludes that so there is very little chance of that happening.

Sorry about your windshield. Glad you were not hurt and glad it did not get into the body work.

Sorry to hear of your bad luck.

I bought a few windshields when I had my own tractor/dump trailer.

When it came from my leaky gate(no matter what the driver says, they know when theyre leaking) I bought it, but the stuff kicked up from the road is just bad luck on your part.

Thanks for the condolences guys! I went to the place that we use at work (UPS) and he told me he would get me an O. E. glass and credit my deductable $50. 00.

My other concern was the glass guy scrapping the old mastick out and going thru the paint causing rust out later. The owner told me he would put his best guy on it and they are carefull.

You buy a new truck and it is amazing all the little nicks and other things that happen. Mind you my truck is not a "Garage Queen", I use it but I would like to keep it as nice as I can as long as I can. Chris

Same thing happened to me. I had it replaced at the dealership. They did such a good job I forgot I had it done until you just reminded me of it.

I had two chips repaired at the same time, in my windsield. At the time, the windshield guy told me he'd waive the deductible ($100) if I would let him stick in a new windshield.

I asked him if it would leak after he did it, and he said "Does a bear **** in the woods?" and "If it leaks, bring it back and I'll fix it. "

I told him to forget it, just fix the chips.

Around here its just about automatic for a glass installer to wave the deductible. I average one windshield a year, thanks to Michigan roads and 40,000 miles a year. I have learned there are many makers of glass and are not all the same, stick to the OEM glass that your vehicle came with. I have had a Glass installed in Grand Rapids, that I didn't normally deal with (had a brick took out the entire windshield)replaced my windshield. When the sun hit it at the right angle you could see waves in it, and of course it kept rain out as well as a screen door  . I got lucky a month later and the windshield got hit with a bird, bit messy but I got another windshield from my usual supplier. If you have to pay cash for glass, don't take their first price, negotiate, and specify the manufacture. You can save some serious cash if you ask :D . The worst they can say is no, and you will most likely find they can do better on price.

I always find it amazing that people out there will follow big rigs to save gas from the reduction in wind resistence. I would rather spend a few bucks more in gas than to follow a truck and get showered with rocks. I keep a good 1/8 of a mile between me and a semi at freeway speeds and so far it has paid off... ... ... . 2 years and a perfect windshield. :)

Hope your luck is not like mine. I said the same thing to a friend and within a month I had a broken windshield, cost me $250 Och. Good luck.

Chipstien, I too am carefull about following trucks too close. He was well ahead of me and we weren't going but 35mph. Just the day or so before, I told my wife not to follow so close(one of the few times she drives my truck) to avoid getting the paint and windshield pitted. YOU BETTER KNOCK ON WOOD!!!

NVR FNSH, YES the d@mn thing is still torn up. I think by the time they are done, they will have to start again to add another lane both ways. This weekend, some woman got dizzy going down the grade, STOPPED her car in the fast lane to change drivers and started a major pileup.

Hey Doc, good to hear from you. ;)
