Need to see some pics please...
I was considering going the same thing and could use the help of a pic.
digital camera's broken, or I might have done it already.
here's a verbal descr. though.
I've got 8ft bed, but with a Delta toolbox, so effectively, it's a 6footer
I got 3 8' 2x10's
one I cut in 1/2. Those pieces I put against the toolbox, and against the tailgate, to enclose the ends of the "box".
The other 2 2x10's were cut approx. 6ft long. they run lengthwise with the truck, and are attached to the 4footers with Stanley 2" cornerbraces.
I placed the 2 long runners about 14" apart, so that the 4 boards, at this point look like a Roman Numeral II. (this divides the truckbed into 3 sections, with the middle (between the 2 long ones) potentially lockable.
The 2 leftover 2foot scraps are also used. I placed them fore and aft of the right-side wheelwell, and attached them at a 90* angle to the right-side runner-board.
This shifts the roman numeral II a little offcenter (towards the driver's side
Now the truckbed has 5 sections.
on the driver's side, 1 long section that won't be covered by plywood,
next, nearly centered, but not quite, one long section that's lockable (when I install the lock)
finally, on the passenger side, 3 smaller sections (forward, adjacent-to, and aft-of the wheelwell.
Now to enclose the mess.
At that point, I started cutting the lids for the 4 center and rightside sections from my plywood sheet
the forward right was a small rectangular lid about 2' x 8 or 10"
To lift it on and off, I holesawed a 2-1/2" hole in the middle, as a grab-point.
the section over the wheelwell is about 2'x3'rectangular, also with circle-grabs sawn in
The right-rear section is about 2x2 square.
both of the latter sections are hinged to the one long lid that covers the long centersection
I may re-think/redesign the hinging arrangement, in order to make the centersection lockable
Current end result. a splitlevel truckbed with a 5-room basement.
the lids are sized so that the edges of the 2x10's support the edges of the lids
I can now throw a sleeping bag, and maybe even an air mattress on top of the plywood, and have a smooth surface for sleeping during a short-time campout.
I covered all the plywood with green astroturf to decrease splinters and wood-creak noises
My jumpercables, tow chains, and hitch drawbars are in the unlocked RR compartment, where I can get to them without crawling over other stuff
the Hi-Lift jack and some firewood are in the center section
other unsightly odds and ends in the other compartments.
I chose 2x10s to have the platform high enough to rest on the wheelwell, rather than having to trim around them
Actual miles may vary.
