I had my transmission rebuilt this week. It is highly modified with a long list of non-stock parts, including a billet main shaft and modified valve body. The torque converter is a triple disk bolted to a billet flex plate. So far, it works great. I have only put about 100 miles on it.

For years, my engine idles just a hair (red one) below the line for 700 RPM with the A/C on and in gear. With my new transmission, with the first start of the day (cold engine - 70 degree day) the engine starts as it always has. If I do not allow the engine and transmission to warm up, and I put it in gear without increasing the idle it will kill the engine. After everything is warmed up, all works fine. I have to hold the brake when in gear at a stop.

Any thoughts?

My 97 would die when put in gear or the a/c turned on. Happened all the time when cold. Dealer reset the curb idle, about 850 rpm, and the problem was gone. With the tighter TC you will more than likely have to set idle speed higher. Set using a good tach, not the one on dash.

Kind of a catch 22. When warm, works great, have to hold the brake at a stop on flat ground. If I raise the idle, I think I will really have an issue at a stop. I will try raising the idle.

As for the tach, I have no idea as to how accurate it is. However, if the idle is indicated at 700 RPM, I will bump it up to 800.

I kinda think maybe the trade off with a real tight converter it would effect the the idle, unless you are not in gear. Probably fair to say, you should warm up the engine and transmission/converter before driving.

Thanks for the input guys.
