I got suckered into towing our re-enactment group's gear to the Big War this year. The trailer we were loaned was a POS. I think the tires on it were the original ones. Can you say dry rot? I wasn't going to cough up the $$ to purchase new tires at the last minute. So they sent a lone female with zip functional towing experience, but some common sense, off with all the common equipment, including the kitchen and shower. No convoy for support. Lucky me, I had only 2 minor problems. A vibration loosened nut and a burned out left turn signal bulb.
What have I learned?
Look at any loaned equipment well in advance of picking it up for actual use.
I hate surge brakes.
If I were to do this regularly, I'd want more horses under the hood.
I can back a trailer if you don't send stupid signals like waving your arm in a circle. Just point the direction you want me to make the trailer go. And stay where I can see you!
