Ford F-350 Crewcab, 6bta Questions.

air to air cooler

Well, we got all the old junk torn out yesterday, at least.

Trick or treat! See my feet? :D

This thing is uglier than Curtis' Fleetwood with the front end all tore off!

The old 413 and 727 come out:

It's kinda dark, but here you can see the "new" 6BT, the old 413/727 on the ground, and me leaning on my Tokhiem 39 gas pump... that I WAS going to restore this winter, but obviously that is not going to happen. :(

Here's the empty engine bay. You can see the new front leaf springs and Monroe shocks I installed earlier this summer:

One more shot of the old 413/727, for good measure:

MUCH more to follow. Stay tuned!

I cannot wait to see more pics of the project!

Are going to adapt Dodge mounts, or make your own from scratch?

ALSO: I like the pump! I think you should have a bomb party at your place and it could get filled with tequila ;) :D

Forgot about your title, I nearly did.

PS

Hmmmm, when the new engine your motor home has, have enough gear for the highway, it will not.

Change the gears will you? Or another aux transmission shall you buy? hmmm?

ROFL

Trust the force!

Too bad Jackson is so far away or I'd drop in and help. (or just drink your beer and give you a hard time :D )

Looks like a fun project

I have the frame brackets out of the donor truck here. HOWEVER... looking at the mounts on the original 413 and comparing them to the CTD that is slated to go in, it appears as though they share the same "square rubber puck with a threaded stud coming out of the middle" configuration. You can see one of the chassis brackets in the picture I posted of the empty engine bay. I'm going to cross my fingers and hope that it will bolt right onto whats already there! I meausered both engines and the distance from the flywheel to the engine mount stud is the same, however the front of the CTD is MUCH longer. 'Course, I knew I would be whacking a notch out of the front crossmember even before I began this project.

I was hoping to get by with the OD on the 518. I've been talking to a guy who did a repower on a '69 almost identical to this one. He claimed that the . 68 overdrive and the 4. 88 rear end worked nicely together. Supposedly his rig was turning 1800RPMs at 60MPH and maxed out at 2500RPM slightly below 80. IMO, that is plenty fast enough for a rig this size. Not only that, I think my rig might be geared a little higher as his originally had a poly 318 and mine had a big block. Anyhow, we're going to TRY it and see what happens...

PS-Would love to host a BOMB party someday.

Methinks we need another update here

Yes Virginia, I DID take care of the KDP:

Replaced the rear main seal and also installed the updated 3946161 flexplate. That's the new converter off to the right:

Oh yeah, almost forgot...

Didn't get any pictures of it, but I also pulled the starter off and installed a set of those "Larry B" oversize contacts during this last work session.

It's in!

Actully had it in last Sunday night, just never got around to uploading these new pics until today. :(

This new exahust manifold was necessary to swing the turbo down out of the way due to clearance concerns. AND... sice we have the turbo off, might as well ditch that 18. 5 CM housing in favor of a 16, right?

This is the end result of about four attemps, a shoe horn, and LOTS of profanity  :

Underneath putting the oil pan back on:#ad

And that's pretty much how I spent my holiday weekend. There is still a LOT to be done... .

Re: manifold

jvanwaardhuizen,

I bought the exhaust manifold new from the local Cummins/International dealer. I got the P/N from a guy who repowered a coach similar to this one. I was under the assumption that it's for some kind of off-road or industrial application, but I'm not 100% certain.

Don

manifold

it looks similar in the fact that the flange is turned down but it looks like it has alot bigger runners. is it tapped for a pyro in two places?

It looks like it would be a "4+2" configuration at first glance, but If you look at it close up you will see that it is actually "3+3", just like the OEM unit.

I only have one pyro tap in it.

It bolted down onto them almost prefectly! Emphasis on the ALMOST part. The 413 mounts were a wee bit too narrow, but we were able to get them to line up with the 1st gen 6BT mounts on the engine by turning the pucks around.

Now that the transmisson is in place and the new rear crossmember bolted in, we may try picking the engine back up by the front lifting eye and see if we can line them up a little better.

Great looking project!

I put a 91 12v in my 76 crew-cab and know what you are going

through. What kind of torque converter and transmission are you using?

A lot of folks talk about these kind of swaps but few ever actually

get it done... ... ... ... ... . Congratulations

Hiya JD!

I'm using the 518 that came out of the same truck with the engine. I had a Transgo shift kit installed in it and this is the torque converter that I'm going to be using:

http://www.mojave-green.com/inc/pdetail?v=1&pid=379

Since it's essentially a granddaughter of the original 727 that came out of there, many of the original ancillaries (shifter, etc) hooked right back up with little difficulty. I did have to use the rear crossmsmember from the D250 and I had to drill all new holes to bolt it to the frame. Not fun. :{ I still need to shorten the driveshaft and replace the yoke as well.

Haven't made much progress on this latley as right now it is too damn COLD outside to do so. However plans are to jump back on it in earnest come late February/early March.

CMON SPRING!

Don

Cold? Bah Humbug.

Where is your sense of adventure?

Whats a little frostbite on your fingers and toes when you are in the middle of a project like this?

(Who needs anything past the last knuckle anyway? ROFL)

BRRRRRRRR!!!!!

This is the time when we all wish we had a shop with 4,000 SQ FT free and heated with 20 foot cielings and a lift.

Hey, that could be a post all of its own. My dream shop would be...

When you get to the point of radiator, will you be using the stock fan, electrics... ???

Also, what did they have for a cooler on that year for the trans fluid? Does it have the cooler on the side of the engine?
