behind a big rig...what the H happened???

Ok, so I'm in Puerto Rico this week on business (really) and I'm driving to work.

I'm in the R lane(in a corolla rental don't tell anyone) and I have a tractor trailer hauling a tanker in front of me in the L lane..... all of a sudden it starts spewing thick pure white smoke out of it's dual stacks... so thick I could hardly see then he signals and pulls to the right in front of me to get to the shoulder... I almost hit him but was able to panic slow and pull around him.

It continued to spew thick white smoke for as long as I could see behind me.





My question... what happened?

I belive white smoke is low fuel/low compression effect. Turbo, headgasket, injection pump, I don't know, but would be interesting to know.

Turbo more then likely.

All the turbo voters got my vote. that is what they do. MAJOR loss of power and LOTS of smoke.

yes I agree, turbo faliure, white smoke is caused from oil going down the downpipe, some times causing fire if it is hot enough.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I guess I'd have to figure turbo as well... . since it had dual exhaust I figured V8 diesel, and both stacks were smoking.

Head gasket would likely be one side only (assuming V8) and no way it was a cold engine. . remember I said I am in Puerto Rico right now... it was probably 80 deg F.

It's rare If you find a v-8 diesel (Not including 3/4 tons) and it is not an old Detroit. Old 2-cycle Detroit's are starting to get rare. Still a lot of Charter boats & Fire engines run them.

I've seen injectors in a big truck spew white smoke like that before... and they happen/fail without warning.

If it was pure white smoke, it was most likely fuel (failed injector)... if it had a tint of blue to it, then most likely oil (failed turbo)...

Hey, me with no camera... the only mammories,er, I mean memmories, will remain a figment of your imagination.....



The smoke was pure white, even out of both stacks, and very difficult to see thru.

Don't forget that we can run duals on our picks with the inline, and big rig's do it too...

In my 8 years driving, I've run into 3-4 V-8s(mostly at shows) and only 1 V-12. 98% of all the US trucks are I-6s. Some folks still do run the V-8/12 but they are far behind on drivability and fuel economy. Our 6-71 netted us a 6. 2mpg trip(hauling one way) and used 3gallons of oil(850 mile trip)
