belt squall.....

Is there anything I can do about that annoying belt squall? It has got a fairly new one and it squalls. I have tried that belt dressing stuff, and it is only temporary. It works for about a day or so and then starts up again. Any help, thanks...

I had the same problem, turned out to be the water pump was going bad, check to see if the pulley on the pump is able to wobble any at all if so replace ASAP about $89 from napa for a new pump 30 min install . . RD

I've heard many, many Cummins powered trucks that squeal at shut down. Mine does it as well... I think its the tensioner pulley... correct me if i'm wrong.
I do also recall reading about a product that was supposed to remedy it... something like a "gator-back" belt... I believe it's a brand name

If this is belt noise, it is apparently common. The engine stops too quick for the belt and there is a quick screech. Mine does it on occassion, mostly when she's good and warm. I've read the same comment here on the site a couple times. A weakening 'tensioner' can contribute to this too.

Replace your belt with a Goodyear "Gatorback" which will in most cases stop the screech when you shut down the engine. As some of the others have said, the sound comes from the crankshaft stopping faster, due to the high compression, than the belt driven components which causes the screech.

My belt use to squeal also until I replaced it with a better belt. That has kept it quiet now for a year upon shutdown. Lately it has started making a belt noise again but this time it was the Belt Tensioner. I did a search in the archives I think and found Practical Solutions had the Tensioner for a LOT less (about 1/3 the price) then Mother Mopar. I just installed it this past week with NO problems. Great instructions and took about 15 minutes of your time. Well worth the $$ in my mind. Noise has once again gone away and looking at the old one, I can see why it made noise. Wasn't really bad but spinning the bearing you can hear it rubbing on the inside.

it does it all of the time, not just on shut down. I was rather embarassed the other day when a bunch of us st. louis members were going to test drive a new Chebby and it was squalling real bad when I pulled in the driveway. It seems to do it worse when it rains real bad. Thanks for the help... B. J.

Moisture on the belt makes a great squeal/squall/chirp noise and yes belt dressing is only a temporary solution unless you take the belt off and spray it real good then let it dry before putting it back on. I found that OEM belts work better than after market. Can't wait to try the Gator-Back from Goodyear.

Hi, My 92 Cummins had an annoying screech to the belt and at first I thought it was the belt. It did it all the time. Come to find out the bearing in the belt tensioner was bad. I put a new belt on and ordered a new tensioner from Dodge ($145, ouch!!) and that solved all of my problems. It only took 15 minutes and a smashed set of knuckles to change everything. Mine schreeches when you shut it off, but I have never seen a Cummins that does not do that. Hope that helps. Oh yeah, if your tensioner is bad, try to find a replacement bearing because it will be much cheaper. The bearing can be changed, but I did not realize that until after I had already bought the new tensioner. You can't get a new bearing from Dodge. I think I would try NAPA. Have a good Chrismas!!

Hey guys,

When replacing your idler/tensioner and/or water pump, go to your Cummins distributor not the Dodge dealers. You get the same product but without the DC and dealer markup.

I don't know if they are available on the B5. 9, but you might ask if they have a Cummins ReCon part available. It would be even less expensive. Cummins ReCon is a genuine Cummins rebuilt part which is rebuilt back to the same specs as the new part.

My $0. 02 to save you a few pennies.

(I don't work for Cummins--just worked with them over many years in the heavy duty truck business)

My belt starts squalling after the truck has been running for a few minutes in the morning. A new tensioner pulley is $22. 50 at NAPA, going to buy one this weekend and replace it. It SOUNDS like the noise is coming from that direction, worth a shot.

I have a new water pump and a new tensioner. I have a new Gates green stripe belt and sometimes in foggy light rain my belt squalls some very annoying. I would like to try that Goodyear belt.

Can anyone explain WHY spraying the belt with dressing will STOP the noise if it's reallly an IDLER or water pump problem? That dressing dern sure isn't affecting the idler or water pump bearings!

My belt does the same thing ALL the time while it's running, and it DEFINITELY is the belt, NOT the idler or water pump! Some belts just DO that - the only reasonable suggestion I have heard is to remove the belt and reinstall it running in the opposite direction - haven't tried it yet, so don't know if it will work in my case or not...

Mine was doing this when warm. I bumped up the idle a little and it went away. I seemed to have sticky throttle linkages and perhaps the idle was once adjusted in a stuck position??? I tweaked and lubed the linkages as well and it is smoother now. This helped some erratic harsh dowhshifting as well. Idle may now be a little high when cold and I'm not sure what if any harm this could cause. I've only had the truck a little while and have lots to learn so am happy to share in these discussions.

Start from the begining: If the sound is not your tensioner, and its not the bearings on the water pump, the all that's left is the belt itself against the various pullies. Thus the noise some people experience when its wet out (belt slip). Replace your belt, or more expesively, have a good mechanic align all the pullies so that they're all in one plane (good preventive maint. anyway), then adjust the belt tension so it is acceptable. If this doesn't solve that terribly annoying sound, your belt will need replacement. But first, try using a bit of very coarse sandpaper, or even what I use (a body worker's sandpaper stick, basically a tongue depressor dipped in glue then in super coarse/hard sand). But if you get your hands under the hood while you engine is cranking, be **** careful. I just use the stick fix on the three contact surfaces of the belt in question as it runs. This will get rid of most of the glazing on the belt, and reduce or remove the source of the noise. #ad

bad news!!!! Belt is not a year old either and has marks on the outside where it is already worn. It still squalls bad too. What do I have now. My dad just noticed the belt was like that and it was not too long a go I checked for that. Where can I get those gatorback belts and how much are they? Thanks. Got my isspro boost gauge on with an Amsoil air filter on order. Can't wait. Throwing K&N away!
