I posted this in the 2nd gen forum too:

I have some 17" stock steel wheels off an 03 and one or more is slightly bent. When you put it on the balancer you can see a slight wobble. With the balancer here that I have access to, you can balance just the rim. So far, All I have needed is .5 oz to balance it. So my question is: how much is too much? I want to keep the wheels as used 17" tires seem to be easier to find than 16's, and I like the idea of having two sets of wheels and tires ready to go at all times.

The balancer is a Hunter Road Force Touch - which is the best machine manoey can buy at this time, but getting big holed wheels like ours to perfectly center is a challenge - $15k machine or not.....

you can NOT balance away a bent or out-of-round wheel.
It will still wobble, actually more so at the contact surface of the tire. The further away from center you get the worse the wobble will be.
You can balance an egg but if you tried to drive with it on an axle it would still ride like s&^t.
No lateral run out (side to side) No radial run out. (up and down).
Out of round, is out of round. The only good use for an out of round wheel is a paperweight (maybe a hose reel on the side of the house).

Here's something I found on another internet forum (hey, it's on the internet so it MUST be true, right??):

Here's what the Dodge 2500 shop manual says:

Check the wheel radial and lateral runout.

•STEEL WHEELS: Radial runout 0.031 in., Lateral runout 0.031 in. (maximum)

•ALUMINUM WHEELS: Radial runout 0.02 in., Lateral runout 0.025 in. (maximum)

And here's what it says about tire runout:

•Lateral runout of more than 2.0 mm (.080 inch) measured near the shoulder of the tire may cause the vehicle to shake. Radial runout of more than 1.5 mm (.060 inch) measured at the center line of the tread may cause the vehicle to shake. Sometimes radial runout can be reduced. Relocate the wheel and tire assembly on the mounting studs. If this does not reduce runout to an acceptable level, the tire can be rotated on the wheel.

Rusty
pretty close numbers.
when I was running a shop we tried to hold the tolerances even closer than that.
These would be the maximum and results that would be acceptable/borderline but still might not yield the desired results. aka: vehicle still might not ride all that well/close but not perfect.

Try Here

I was able to find a suitable cone and actually center th wheel like it's supposed to be. They are all straight and true. I guess I'll keep them. Now for some tires.....but NOT until after we close on our house and get moved. I have the stock 16's with about 8-9 32/nds left and they'll get me through the move and into the fall.

I was looking at these - http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...GRAT2OWL&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes

what do you think?

Blue Ridge Wheel in Brunswick MD straightens wheels, worth a call maybe.
