Fretting on the head?

I will take the clumsy mechanic award for this one, but while installing my 16cm housing on my h1c, it popped off and I lost grip on the turbo and it fell, bounced twiceon the turbine impeller... (two blades bent slight from what I could see :--) . Anyway I tried to bend them back slightly and called it good but now I'm afraid. With the Straight piped setup I hear an irregular turbo sound like a chirping almost when the air goes thru the two bonked blades, wheich were almost next to eachother. Anyone know where to replace this turbine impeller or "pinwheel"? And cost? Do you think the imbalance will be ok to drive on for a while? Super embarrased right now. Hope someone can learn from my mistakes. I tackled this job too late, tired (after getting to my wit's end trying to remove the 18 housing!!), and alone. Bad combo!

I don't know if I would run it. Having a bent blade is probably going to throw it off balance, and with it spinning as fast as they do, it could disentegrate. If that happens, your looking at a lot more than a turbo... ... ... better safe than sorry, and broke. Tough luck, I'm putting an HX-35 on mine in the next week, I'll be sure to be very careful when I reclock the housing. Hopefully others can learn from your dilemma.

Nick, sorry to hear about that. How rich are ya? I'd say $1100 you can have yourself a nice PDR HX40-16. Pass on the HX35 as you will inevitably be surpassing its capabilities in the future, why spend the money twice -$650 for a hx35, then the $1000+for a 40, take the leap forward then adjust your fueling to better suit it. Wished I'd went that route. JMO as not everyone here will agree... then sell that H1C 16cm housing and get your hx40 downpipe paid for... :D

I sent you a PM. I have a stock non intercooled tubro if your interested.

Don't feel bad. We all make mistakes at times. Being tired isn't the best time to do something.

don't feel bad fellow bomber. the first turbo i took apart, i didn't realize that the nut on the shaft was reverse thread. just thought that it was tq'd to about 150 ft lbs! there went that shaft. the second turbo i took apart, i was tapping the shaft out, with turbo held at about waist height, when it all of a sudden let loose and bounced around on the floor a few times. there went that shaft. at least they were both broken ones to begin with, but you get the idea. just rest assured that you won't let it happen again, eh?

anyway, under no circumstance would i run that turbo. you've got way too much at risk.

Turbo bent

I would have to weigh in on pitch it. You can lose the entire engine from a bad turbo. Don't know if you ever saw the result of a turbo going out, but I can assure you 'it aint pretty'. Bent and out of balance, it will most likely start to shave aluminum and the result of that is aluminum oxide in the cylinders. You may be familiar with the fact that aluminum oxide is an extrordinarily good abrasive. You get the picture.

By the way, go back and read the post that Tugboat Phil started on screwups about a year ago. Be assured that you are in good company here.

I kinda have to agree with '1stgen on that... you should either have the entire thing checked and rebuilt properly or just pitch it and start with a good condition/used unit.

I can vouch for the damage that can be done when one comes apart. . even under light throttle... it's not good.

I'm pretty sure we can round up a decent used unit for now and you can run it till you can afford to do a good RE&RE on it.

A lot of guys are using/trying the HTT "kit" on their own... most seem happy and so far I haven't heard of any imbalance failures... it is a bit more risky that having it done properly but it is a bit cheaper too... .

Since we push our trucks pretty hard I personally like the idea of a full "zero balance" turbo.

pb... .

Like I said before, I'm getting ready to put an HX-35 on mine, probably next weekend. A friend of mine is upgrading his 2nd gen, and I'm getting his hand me down. Provided I'm happy with the performance of his, mine will be sitting on the shelf. If that's the case, you can have mine for the cost of shipping. It's probably not in the best of shape, but it has a 14 cm housing, and no bent blades, so take that for what it's worth. If you haven't found a replacemnet by then, pm me and we'll talk.

You probably don't need another guy jumping on you , but I'm goinna do it anyway.

Consider the turbo toast. While it MAY run for a long time, it also may fatigue and grenade itself in a matter of seconds. It all depends on load, rpm, balance and the vibration it sets up.

I have seen turbine blades get fatigue tested... when they get to their natural frequency they break in seconds.

Thanks Everybody!

Thanks for the responses everyone! I'm going to go with philips turbo for now, and until then the truck will be parked... Advice well taken. Glad to be a part of the TDR's and I that reminds me (and gives me great incentive) to renew my membership this month... :D :D :D :D :D  :)

Oops

Sorry to hear about your "drop", I once replaced the turbo on my Case backhoe and forgot to prime it with oil. Needless to say it was shot on startup. We all make mistakes. Those turbos spin SO fast, if it's only slightly out of balance you're asking for trouble. Replace it.

turbo that was off balance was being tested by the navy. half way through the test they relized it. shut if off. a second later it exploded. when through 4 cinder-block walls. it could kill you. be carefull.

New turbo in!!

Ok guys no more bent bladed turbo on my truck, new one is in and it really sounds great! THANKS PHILIP!! + now I'm making 26PSI max boost with some pump tweaks...
