What tires do TDR readers like for highway driving? I use my diesel ram as the family vehicle but the ride and mileage of the original Goodyear's could be better. Are there better choices available?

Michelin 265/75/16 LTX AS. They are load range E for heavy hauling and I haven't seen a tire to beat it for my uses listed below. There are always specialty tires for one purpose or another of course, but these are great for all around. I drive very fast on the highway, drive in lotsa sand @ beaches, snow, rain, etc. Michelin has an "MS" LTX but has a more aggressive/noisy tread that does not last as long. I think overall that they are a very tough tire, quiet and smooth. Outta be for about $180 each! The Cummins wears out ANY tire faster than most vehicles. I have been looking long and hard @ 19" conversion, just haven't had the $2500 laying around, YET:D

Also consider the Bridgestone R260 or Michelin XPS Rib. Both are excellent wearing highway tires. No good in snow though if that's a concern.

Toyo Tires

Just purchased Les Schwab's top of the line Toyo tire (Open Country AT). It normally sells for $146. 00 each. They are having a 50th anniversary sale until the end of August. The Lt 245/75/16 10 ply rated E tire is selling for @123. 00 each. I was told it was the roundest tire they've ever sold. Has a 50K warranty. It runs smooth and quiet. It is a very good looking tire. It is already factory siped, also.

Hope to get many miles out of them.

Good luck.

If it is highway, go with the Michelin XPS Rib, you can get them at Sam's Club for $158. If you need snow traction then go with the Michelin LTX/MS, these will cost you around $170 per tire. When it comes to tires I only buy the best. Safety is to important to gamble with.

BRobertson,

Which Toyo are you running and how do they do in the snow?

I'm due for a new set before winter and I'm still trying to decide.

I have 33" BFG AT's and they have a 50k warranty. I got 51k out of my last setOo. They have no "humm" or any kind of noise to them. Not sure if they would be as smooth as the mich. or toyo though. But they look cool:cool:

I have the Open Country 265-75-16, 10 ply.

They are great in snow, especially packed snow and ice, at least as good as a non studded tire can be. I noticed a big improvement over the OEM Michelins. I have approx 11,000 miles on them and so far are wearing very well. They have a substantially stiffer, stronger sidewall than the Michelins and corner better on our heavy trucks!! I run approx 5lbs less pressure in front and back (than the Michelins) because of the stiffer tire.

Are these, all steel recappable tires like the Michelin XPS Rib/Tractions? The XPS Rib/Tractions are commercial grade tires that should give better shoulder wear in the front end based on the natural toe-in that our rigs have. The Michelin LTX/MS are also 10 ply tires but don't have the heavy steel in the side wall. I would of bought the XPS Traction's but I did not want to buy 6 tires and I could get by with buying 2 LTX/MS, much cheaper
