Just curious what's your best 60' time with a manual transmission? Hear mostly about the autos around here since you can build boost off the line with 'em, so figured I'd ask about the sticks too.
Hey Rick why don't you mention your launching in 3rd gear with a SBC DD! :-laf
I drove JR Adkins truck last weekend with the "IRON GIANT" from SBC. It was definately a little bit more stiff than my 3850. :-laf
You didn't really notice it till you had to kind of "HOLD" the pedal there for a second, the initial pedal feel was almost identical to a 3850 plate load.
Don't remember what my 60' was. I launched in 3rd, 4wd with the smoke pedal on the matt. Pulled like a maddog until I had to grab 4th, but then the monster DD slowed things down, took too long to grab that gear. These big DD clutches hold the power, but I don't have any luck getting through the gears quick enough to get a solid pass.
Chris, yes it was my '98. 3. 54 and 265/75/16. You might as well give up on drag racing a stick. I think to launch it like you need to... it will burn a clutch up in two or three runs. To get a decent time I think you need to build about 30 lbs of boost in 3rd and let her rip. I did this in two wheel drive about 3 times w/ a 3850 pressure plate and it was gone by 4th or 5th time.
Craig, I know exactly what you are talking about, but for me it was 5th gear. I have had terrific runs till I get to 5th gear. I am mean sometimes it WILL NOT go in 5th at all. I have hit my hand on the dash, and have had it still not go in 5th gear. BTW the short shifter IMO is junk.
I got a 1. 96 in my 2001 4x4 QCSB, it had a 2 inch level kit and 315 75 16 tires and 3. 54 gears, 5 speed. Had southbends con O clutch in there, 350 hp clutch. DD 1 injectors and a comp box, stock turbo. 14. 26 at 93. I came out in 2nd gear, did not build any boost off of the line, just put the throttle to the floor and slipped the clutch out just right. Anything bigger than the stock turbo would be to laggy, I think.
Speaking of 1st gens, I have been to a track twice and had a 1. 97, 1. 99 & a few 2. 00. I was launching at 2500 rpm (it revs to 3500) on 265/75/16s. My sig. has all the other info. I easily could have bested that but I just put the clutch in a couple weeks before and was taking it "easy".
i test drove 94 5 speed today, i don't know how you shift those things, especially racing down the track. the 98-02 shifter is much easier imho. wouldn't affect 60' much, but the rest of the track...
1. 95 with 300hp, sticky clutch (joe d sachs), and bald 235/85r16 remmington mud brutes and 3. 5 gears. The best times were when all the tires spun through 2nd gear and mid way through 3rd.
Yea, thats the same reason I have a big pile of broken nv4500 parts from 300hp. Its all in how you drive it, and I am a little more aggressive than most.
