It's about time for new brakes and rotors and I'm thinking about better stopping power.

Do I go with "slotted rotors" or "drilled rotors".

Is there a company that makes a combo,(rotors and pads) thats better than the rest?

Regards,

Lowell :)

Had a good friend of mine replace his worn brakes with new slotted fronts and drilled rear rotors w/ pads. EGR recomends going with slots in the front due to the heavy weight of the CTD heating the rotors up.

i agree egr brake. have used them in the past and was very happy. stay away from the drilled and go with the slotted because the drilled rotors are not forged that way there is more of a chance of cracking

I looked at the egr stuff and it seems to be very high quality and a lot of people say good things about it. However, due to cost, I went with Raybestos Super Stop Severe Duty drilled and slotted rotors (P/N ST56324L & R) and CARDONE Severe duty reman calipers (P/N 154347 & 154348). I got these for 381. 73 (plus 100 core) shipped from rockauto.com. I also put on a set of braided brake lines and replaced the fluid. I've got about 10k miles on them mostly driving around town and only 3 300 mile trips with the TT. So far they are great. Stops straight and no pull!

I got some severe duty drilled/slotted rotors for my '99 from autozone (special order) for about $110 each. I used performance friction carbon metallic pads with free replacement warranty. This combo worked AWESOME compared to stock, and compared to the aftermarket non-drilled/slotted rotors that kept warping. I tend to drive my truck like a sports car, so I was always warping rotors... never had a problem with the new ones. However, they DO eat the pads faster. I don't really mind this since the new pads are free, and the '99 calipers need to be lubed more often anyways... 30 minutes every 15K or so is no big deal. I've also heard great reports about the EGR brakes, but that was more $$ than I wanted to spend. That's actually one of the reasons I sold the '99... even with the new rotors, I wanted discs in the rear and the bigger rotors of the 3G.

EGR a waist

I don't mind putting out the cash if I get the quality. The quality is not there with EGR. I called them the other day when I found out that my rotors were shot after 1 set of pads. Below specs, couldn't be turned!!! That's not what I had in mind when I laid out the big bucks for their upgrade kit. It took them (Glen) 3 days to respond to my message I left on his machine. I tried calling 3 times & kept getting the machine. Anyway he doesn't stand behind the product. Buyer beware!!! Just cuz TDR touts it don't make-em great. Do the homeworke, shop around, possibly try the Tire Rack.com. . I went back to the basic's cuz my truck was on the hoist and it's my daily driver. Couldn't wait for EGR to maybe call back. Good luck & save your bucks.

What core? Did you get the hubs with new bearings and everything? Both sides for $381?

There was a $100 core on the calipers and I think it cost me about $20 to ship back the old ones. I just got the rotors only, no bearing assy. I thought it wasn't to bad of a deal, since I had to get new rotors anyway and I was having a heck of a time with the calipers sticking. The calipers came with pads and they seem to be holding up well.

I too am a fan of the EGR brake pads and shoes, I switched over last year and it was one of the best mods I have made. Their stuff is first class, and I would also recomend the stainless steel lines, they really firm up the pedal, and the older trucks with there rubber hoses should be replaced anyway.

I did not go with their rotors or calipers, instead i went to Raybestos and ordered their Super Stop Extreme duty rotor, they are very heavy duty, have internal cooling vanes, and come cross-drilled and gas slotted. Yes, cross-drilled. And they are fine, don't listen to the old rummors about them being bad. Those were only because people were drilling their own rotors and they had no ideal what they were doing. They work fantasic, and the stopping power is un-believeable. I also used Raybestos re-man calipers, they are excellent and no different then the EGR brand. The rotors list for 195. 00 and I got them for 110. 00, calipers were about 60 each.

If you do go with the EGR pads, shoes and lines, remember to get yourself several bottles of their fluid. Take the time needed to flush your trucks brake fluid and replace it with their synthetic fluid.

Right front with hub adapter in place and ready for tires. Egr pads and lines installed with Raybestos rotor.

Good luck with your EGR stuff the guy doesn't stand behind them when the rotors are shot. Been there, tried that!! The SS brake lines did help take some of the softness out. Went back to the cheap stuff and having better life outa it.

Rotors

I just got a price quote from brakesrus.com and the rotors are slotted and drilled a pair for the front of my 96 ram 2500 4x4 are $123. 50 and pads are $63. 00. thinking about trying them out.

Avoid the EBC brand

Also avoid Brakes-R-Us.

Lousy customer service.

Learned the hard way.
