I'm about to re-pack the bearings on my 5er (~11,000 loaded wt). I don't want to start a war here (i. e. asking if synthetic or dinosaur oil is better), but what is the best bearing grease?
I've been using high temp wheel bearing grease available at any auto parts store . no problems ever. Adjusting the bearing correctly once repacked is more important . I'believe the end hub end play spec is. 003 to . 005 ". I have only ever seen this checked at the commercial truck shops. You don't want to know the horrible thing I've seen at trailer shops and rv dealers.
I agree with kschitoskey. Use a high temp grease with the correct NGLI spec and you won't have any grease related problems. Proper repacking and preloading is most important.
Thanks for the replies. Looking through my 5er's instruction manual for the Al-Co axles mentions an actual torque spec for the bearing nut. I've always done it by feel - crank it down until it won't move, then back off a quarter of a turn or so. Never seen a torque value before.
