They do seem wider and flatter so any dents are really noticeable. I had a small dent near the center stake pocket and was able to "lift" it out with a 5/16" allen wrench. They seem to be paper-thin. It's a shame they don't use a little heavier stuff on such a vulnerable part of the truck.
If I weren't getting a cap soon, (hopefully) I'd be looking for something too.
I installed black dee zee diamond plate rails on mine. They add a lot of strength to the rails. Mine are black without the stake holes. (they were not available yet) And they look good.
I went with the Dee-Zee also. Aluminum with diamond plate and stake holes. They seem every bit as good as the previous generations. (I had them on my 96)
They used a double sided adhesive tape to hold them down on top and screws from the inside of the rail. I didn't like the tape because it appeared they would tend to rock from side to side on it. It was almost an 1/8" thick. I peeled it off and went with a couple pop rivets from the top. Overall good units and they look sharp.
