I've had the Espar on my '98 since shortly after I got it new. I bought the Espar direct from Espar Canada off an add in the TDR mag. Currently I'm having problems with it and I am about to give up and upgrade it to a D5 unit. If I can't get it running this weekend, or at least identify the problem, I'm going shopping. (Spoiled!) I stopped at Interstate Diesel tonight to inquire on prices. They had a D4 and D5 on the shelf that were in kit form. The D4 looked like the Dodge kit. The D5 had the enclosure box with it and all the other generic install parts but no controller and no exhaust or coolant hoses. I am relocating it for better access also so I will need the box to protect it but don't need the other stuff. I was quoted a price of a little over a grand for it. Thats close to what I paid for the Dodge kit 6 years ago. Does this price sound about right, or do I need to shop elsewhere? I might be able to beat them down some if I try. I expect they have at least a 20% mark up.

Check the TDR classifides. There was a NIB Espar for a Ram for sale. They said it was brand new, never installed for some reason. Don't know if it is still there or not. Haven't looked for it again.

Area injection shop told me some guys have put the big ProHeat units in the pickup bed and plumbed it to the engine.

Sometimes, you can pick a used one aux heater off a truck parts shop.

What's wrong with your Espar?

PM or email me. I'm pretty good at troubleshooting them.

Love my D4 that I purchased through IDD. Running right now so I can get to the hardware store. Balmy -17° this morning.

I ordered my D5 with 7 day timer last week from them and got it this week. I think the price was $995 plus a few bucks shipping. Best price I found. He recommended the unit with seperate water pump for an easier install. He just did one one a 2003 Ram and installed it under the passenger side battery. Sounds like a good location and I intend to do the same.

If you have any questions he can answer them on the best way to install. I told him he needs to get some pics up on his website of an install for us DIY'rs.

Thanks for the replys guys. I got the thing to run tonight. I guess what it needed was a good cleaning of the combustion chamber and the tube that injects the fuel. I was getting the F52 code for "no start time exceeded". The thing would smoke like crazy and I had diesel dripping out the exhaust. Fuel pump put out 7. 5cc just like it should and the air and exhaust ducts were open, and I even tried getting it to start with no exhaust duct at all. I called Espar and they had me test the flame sensor and temperature sensors and they were ok. I finally completely disassembled it and thoroughly cleaned everthing. Then the next few times I tried it I was getting codes for a water pump break, but only after filling it with coolant, and then a code for the fuel pump open circuit. I knew that there was nothing wrong with either so I started cleaning connections and that cured that problem. I cleaned the chamber with a wire brush and then let it soak in carburator cleaner for a couple of days. Then blew it out with compressed air. It seemed like the tube the fuel is fed through might have been restricted. I was getting pretty fed up with the thing.

Now I need to get it relocated. I guess I'm going to put it on the passenger side outside the frame rail. I'm not crazy about the length and the routing of the coolant hoses by the exhaust, but it is wide open there. I was considering inside the frame just ahead of the transfer case but its tight and the fuel lines are in the way so it would have to be spaced out putting it closer to the front drive shaft. Then making a box to protect it would be a problem. Wish there was a place in the engine compartment. The 2nd gens don't have any spare room that I can see. The object of relocating it is to make easier access to it.
