I think you're going to get biased results. It doesn't matter what truck it's in, I'll get the Cummins. Honestly, I wished they would put the Cummins in a Superduty. I like the 4 doors and looks better now than the Dodge. We'll see what they look like next year, though.

That 60 Series Detroit is pretty nice engine, so long as it isn't in a POS Castrated FedEx Freightliner Conv. The Cummins in the COE's would run hard too until they were emasculated by the mechanics. However, the Detroits do get about 2mpg better than the older COE Navistar's.

64MPH with the gearing they have puts 'em right out of the peak powerband and they will not pull hills worth a flip even with the light loads we haul.



Somebody really need to teach our people how to spec a real truck. Do you hear me Fred Smith?

Not that I'm just prejudiced by my Dodge Cummins, Our family farm has 5 Cummins irrigation power units:

1 855

1 505

2 359 (160hp 12V)

1 Unknown V-6 (Sounds just like a NASCAR V-8!)

Not to mention our farmer's tractors, 2

Steiger 4wd tractors w/ 855 Cummins.

Also 2 8T370? Cummins pushing a 60 foot houseboat.

Seen good and bad in these engines, but cool thing is, parts and maintainability are pretty good. Local Cat service tech loves to do sideline jobs on Cummins, can trade parts or hunting rights for services performed! Cummins is popular in irrigation units around here, but have noticed lately Isuzu moving in, Deutz (OK), Deere also trying to move in this market (Deere is pushing some of their tried and true I-6 engines). Intersting subject, I'd still trust Cummins based on my experience...

You forgot Murphy Diesel duh!!!. What the heck is that? Do a search on ancient construction equipment. DOHC 24v belt driven external oil pump, weighs about 8000 lbs, displaces about 18 liters, cast iron pistons, 6 rings/ piston and makes less than 150 hp! I want one in my truck!!

I think CAT makes a cruddy engine. We have the 7. 2 liters in some of our trucks and they get horrible feul milage.

Of course I like the Cummins. I also have to admit I like the sound of the big cat's in the over the road trucks when I am fueling at the truck islands at the Flying J's.

9 out of 10 times I see a semi broken down on the side of the road, the motor is yellow! Ive had good luck with Detroit series 60, our little Cummins, and the small Kubota 3 cylinder motors. I know that in the bigger motors (12-14 liters) Cats are thirsty and expensive to run, Cummins' are better at mileage and cost, and Detroits are probably the best mileage getters.
