I have heard Nelson 51" (86131M) muffler is the best for the money. Will this fit my '06 and where to buy? (preferably Arizona or west)

Try the Freighliner dealership in Tolleson, its just off 99th Ave and I-10. They might have one or know where to get one here in town.

I just installed a Nelson 86131M on mine last week. I`m very pleased with it. It sounds just right to me, not too loud, but alot deeper tone. I saw about a 20-30* drop in EGT`s with it also.

Just for reference, the Donaldson M090544 is just about the same muffler, only it has a cone-shaped baffle inside whereas the Nelson doesn`t.

I have an 86131m on my 05 truck. Got it from Cummins Atlantic last year. My truck runs just a quiet as stock and I do not notice the overdrive drone sound like before. Not to mention my fuel mileage improved a little also. It is a nice piece if you are not upgrading to a larger exhaust from turbo back.

I guess the stock 4" exhaust is plenty for the 5. 9L. I wonder when a full 5" from turbo back is required?

Can anyone chime in with info on any drone while towing with the Donaldson? We put the Nelson on dad's '03 nad it drones. Not bad enough to replace it, but if it ever needs to go, maybe the Donaldson would be better. BTW, we snuck a short little IMCO in front of the Nelson... very little improvement.

Dumb? Where can you get this Donaldson muffler? I know there's a truck dealer and repair place not too far. Or can you get this from the local parts house?

JRG... no drone at all with the Donaldson? How is the sound level and tone of the exhaust while not towing at idle, full accelaration, and crusing speeds (like 35 and 55)? Also, how easy is it to install and how big is the muffler itself? Thanks!

I used the Donaldson M100580 51" long, 5" in/out. Used adapters to mate it to the 4" head and tailpipes. It flows more that anything, Is way quiet with no drone (even without the kitty)

I wanted max flow and real quiet... . I got it!

I like the sound cus it not too loud, almost like a gasser at an idle. Opens up at WOT and calms down at cruising, prob on par with most options out there. Mine is the 4" in/out that was almost the same lenght as stock. I chose it as the price was right <$100, and is readily avail across the country (over the road stuff). Hardest part of the install was getting the stock muffler apart and for the '03 making the 3. 5" to 4" reducer (should have just bought one for the $10). Trimmed the tailpipe and put on a tip, finished (more or less)

Mark... I've talked to you in the past and you were very helpful. I'm still researching and trying to find the quietest exhaust I can get that drops my EGT's down and helps me spool the turbo up a bit. I hate drone and want stock sound levels when cruising and no drone while towing. I don't mind a healthy tone when accelarating hard and I like turbo whine, but I have heard a few 3rd gens with various pipes and they sound like an import gas motor! Not what I'm looking for! Anyone here who has been fortunate enough to have heard several different systems on the 3rd gens please help me out as I have been unable to find any direct comparisons or tests anywhere... this forum or otherwise. Thanks everybody!!!

Me too MoparBob. I want one with no drone while towing. I used to like it as loud as i could get it, but now I'd like something quieter exept when I floor it. Mine has an aweful drone at around 2000-2400 rpms.

I noticed that alot of the ppl that are getting a drone aren`t running a tip. I think alot of the drone is coming from the tailpipe not being out far enough. I`m running a 5" tip on mine and pulled it on out another 1. 5" after I installed the Nelson.

Interesting, what made you choose that one

I want to go with the donanlson muffler. What do I need for a 2003. Is my stock muffler 4" in and 4 " out or do I have to buy a down pipe that goes from 3. 5" to 4". Thanks
