I'll be installing a drain plug into my transmission pan this weekend. Where is the best location to install it to avoid interference with the transmission's internal parts?

Tim,

I put mine on the back of the pan instead of on the bottom. That way it won't be accidently scraped off. You always want to remove the pan to change the filter anyway so all the drain plug will really do is allow you to avoid getting a bath when you remove the pan. There is still about a half pint of fluid in the pan after draining with the plug. but that's not tough to handle without spilling. I always put a drip pan on the garage floor to catch the ceaseless drip when I take the pan off.

I installed a B&M plug into the side of the pan in the dropped portion of the pan. That way you'll drain most of the fluid out.
I did not like the plastic washer on the plug so I brazed it into place along with a temp sending unit at the rear of the pan. Then I bought a Mag Hy-tec pan. If you or anyone is interested I'll sell the stock pan with the plug and sending unit already installed <brazed> for 50 $.

When I had my trans rebilt,I put a plug in mine also. All I did is cut a small ( 3/8" ) pipe coupling in half and weld it on the bottom back section of the pan, put some water inside it to leak test it and the put epoxy over the weld to insure that it wouldn't leak.
