Am about to go Amsoil for engine oil and gear oil. Decided to stay with DC ATF... don't want to tempt synthetic in trannie before a trip out west.

Went to DC dealership to get transmission fluid, trannie filter, and trannie pan gasket. Is this the best place to buy parts, filters, and fluids or are there better after market products?

One other thing, I am installing a Mag-Hitech diff. cover when Amsoil gear oil gets here next week. Also bought a Mag-Hitech trannie pan. I can't see too much difference with the two trannie pans, I read this in older posts too. Is the Mag-Hitech trannie pan worth the $210 or should I send it back?

Last question: My axle is an "anti spin differential". I've read on this board that I should add anti-slip to the differential. The mechanic at D/C said to add two bottles and the stuff is really whale oil. Do I need to bottles or will one do? And since I am going with Amsoil in the rear should I use something else?

Thanks for any help!

Hey there,

I am also considering the MagHytec transmission pan and understand the following:

Feature (1): Drain plug with magnet - stock has no plug
Advantage (1): This lets you drain into reusable containters if you are making an adjustment to line pressure (Auto). The magnet traps any loose metal shavings #ad
and keep them from floating around doing damage.
Benefit (1): Save's you $ #ad

Feature (2): Larger capacity
Advantage (2): More fluid = keeps transmission temp cooler. and results in longer fluid life (And transmission life)
Benefit (2) : Saves you $ #ad

Feature (3): Finned pan
Advantage (3): Fins act as heatsink to lower fluid temp. which results in longer fluid life (And transmission life)
Benefit (3): Saves you $ #ad

At least this is what I'm using as rational to buy one soon!

Scooby,

I like the plug on the Mag-HiTech pan, but my pan also has a magnet in it, no drain plug, though I can buy a drain plug kit for the current pan. One other note, I was under the truck yesterday comparing the two pans, no doubt that the Mag pan has 10x the quality as stock pan.

Do you use the DC trannie filter or is there an after market filter that is much better. After seeing the difference in the quality of the two trannie pans I'm guessing someone has a much better filter out there!

Bill;

When I did the same rear differential changes that you are going to do, I put in the Amsoil rear end fluid without any additives. Now have over 5000 miles with this setup (mostly towing a 10,000# travel trailer) and no problems with the anti spin differential. My suggestion is to try Amsoil only, you can always add a friction modifier later if any binding occurs.

Bill,

I installed the Mag-Hytec cover about 10,000 miles ago. I filled the axle with Amsoil Series 2000 gear lube and so far not a sound from the locking diff on turns. The additive is supposed to be in the Series 2000 and evidently it is.

The most important thing with our LSD is to take it after the gear lube is in it and go to a large parking lot and doo some circle 8s to work in the new fluid. I am changing my gear lube as sson as it get here also and am going with just the AmsOil gear lube.

I purchased a B&M trany pan from Summit that has extra capacity w/drain plug for $109. It is good quality also, just another route to consider.

Rambo and Bill, thanks for the info. I'll leave the lube out and stay straight Amsoil and see what happens.

Drawson, I've read about the figure eights and will do them.

Animal, thanks for the info. Think I will stay with the Mag-Hitech or stock pan.

How about band adjustment, I keep reading about it. Is that something I can do myself when the filter is removed? Also, is there a better filter than the one offered by DC? I plan on getting the trannie fluid and filter today.
