Since I'm installing a new radiator and all the hoses... I thought it might be a reasonable time to install a coolant filter. I'll probably use the Fleetguard non DCA spin on type. They are fairly small and a filter head should be easy to mount.

Which hose is ideal to tap into? Hopefully I can find a place that might prevent as much debris from being trapped in the radiator, core, cooler etc. Although this is probably not entirely possible.

Will just about any coolant line location work?

I have the same question. I bought a spin-on coolant filter setup last fall and didn't get it installed before cold weather set in.

I haven't found a good place to mount the actual filter assembly in my '98 engine bay. I was planning on using a bypass at the heater core inlet/outlets for the filter hose hookup.

The WF2077 is the Fleetguard coolant filter with no chemical in it. It is a bypass filter and can be "T'd " into the heater hose line so that " some " of the coolant always goes through the filter. Don't forget to use shut off taps so you coolant doesn't drain when you have to change the filter, usually once a year. If it is put in the heater hose directly then if your filter plugs up you will have no coolant ( as in heat ) going into your cab. On the older big trucks the filter was plumbed into the engine with 3/8" line and 2 shut off taps. On the newer engines it is built in with only 1 shutoff. The 5. 9 engines have no liners so the filter with chemical ( DCA ) isnn't required. Shadrach

Thanks, that's good information. How important is it to install a coolant filter?

It's not really necessary. It does filter the coolant from any impurities. If you know that your coolant if clean then it's not a problem. I did have one on my V8 Dodge for years but that was because I had had problems with contamination and I had access to a free filter head. The Fleetguard p/n for the filter head is 204163-S.
