i know nothing about shocks. i just want to get a very good shock that rides well on the interstate. i'm not that concerned about price.

and... ... .

are the "bilsteins" a better shock?

If you buy the bilstiens and the ride is too hard/soft you are out of luck, if you buy the ranchos and do not like the ride you adjust them. That was my logic for my purchase, and I am as happy as could be with my Rancho's, I love them. I would have nothing else now. MHO.

When you set them at 5, or whatever the highest setting there is, are they pretty hard. I want something that is or can be pretty stiff.

Pro Comp just announced it will introduce some new shocks in the Spring of 2002. They are called the MX6 adjustable. I'm looking at the ad right now in the March issue of Petersen's 4 Wheel & Off Road. These shocks look a lot like Rancho 9000's, except they have 6 valve settings. Here is some more propoganda quoted from the ad:

"Unlike the ordinary twin tube shocks that use 'one valve fits all' tuning approach, each MX6 is precision engineered and custom valved for your vehicle. "

So, it sounds like the dampening and rebound valves are customized to the specific vehicle, and then you can adjust the settings from there. Sounds way cool. Also, the shocks are designed to be mounted "can up. " This means less unsprung weight, as the majority of the shock's weight is not on the axle, but the frame. Rancho does not recommend that their shocks be mounted in this configuration. Unlike Rancho's, the control knob is not mounted on the can, but instead on the other end. The other information in the ad indicates it is a 51mm Nitrogen Gas monotube design.

They look like the best way to go. But, as they are not available yet, neither is pricing. My guess is they will be competitively priced with Rancho 9000's, but slightly higher. Pro Comp's website doesn't mention anything about these shocks either... .

Brian, set on 5 at all corners they are "have a spare set of kidneys ready" hard, the rear is brutal. There is zero body roll in corners etc. With 3500 pounds in the bed setting 5 is about like a stock ride. I run 2 or 3 in the front and 1 in the rear empty, hard driving or smooth roads setting 2 firms up the rear really well. 3 front and 2 rear is a tad harder than new OEM shocks IMO, 4 front and 3 rear is like a tightly sprung sports car with hard shocks, it corners like it is on rails. Hope my descriptions help. I like the super smooth 3 and 1 ride on mine :D

Check the price on Rancho 9000's at http://www.4wheelparts.com - that's where I got mine.

To us, the real advantage of the Rancho 9000's is their wide range of adjustability. When towing the 5ver, we run settings of 4 front and 5 rear to stop any porpoising (uncontrolled front-to-rear bouncing) as experienced with the stock shocks. The truck rides great at these settings when towing, but it will bust your buns when you unhitch!

Running unloaded, settings of 3 front and 2 rear produce a much more comfortable ride than stock, but with much better control.

Im thinking about the dual control remote RS 9000 system,it about 400 on special, until 2/8 from 4wheelparts.com. does anyone have this setup,I would like the remote control, moslty since i plow, the front needs to be firm while the plow is on,and the rear too, whiel the spreader is full,as it emptys, the ride gets harsh,i can adjust them as needed. I knwo i wont lay in the snow to do it,without the remote,so thats why i was thinking of gettting the complete system,I have 58k and stock shocks, still they are getting tired.

thanks for all of the replys. i ordered my rancho 9000's today. can't wait!
