Competition Fall Brawl 06 in Diesel World Magazine...

Ok I am going to be doing a lot of pulling and have a lot more mods than listed in my sig right now. I currently have a South Bend DD #3600. I an getting another truck for a daily driver and am going to put my current clutch in that truck. I was wanting to get some suggestions on what clutch I should go with? I want a clutch that is going to hold up. I dont want to have to replace or rebuilt it all the time. Does the SB Iron Giant hold up well? Or is EEP's clutch better? Or Haisley? I know guys who have 100+ hooks on their EEP clutch. Do the southbend and the haisley hold up this well or better? Or is there something out there besides those few popular ones that is better yet? If you use any of these for heavy sled pulling or have used them or know someone who has, any input is appriciated.

Love the site!!! Keep up the good work. Oo.

Thanks guys!!

I would call SBC and talk to Peter or Woody. I went with the SBC 3850 12CB DD and I haven't pulled with it yet but according to Woody it was all I needed for the power level I am currently at and am going to eventually get. It all depends on how long you let the thing slip before full engagement. Heat just kills a clutch and the more it slips the less it will last. Woody told me he has had guys that have had the clutch he sold me last forever in extreme HP rigs and others that have not. He explained to me it's all in the driver and how the clutch is treated. I wanted an Iron Giant but after a long discussion with Woody, I was sold on the 3850 12CB. Besides he said if I wanted to upgrade to something bigger or even the Iron Giant later on, it would be very cheap and easy being the whole SBC DD assembly is completely rebuildable.

Just my $0. 02... . :)

Yea i know it all depends on how it is used and how much it is slipped. Just didnt know if anyone has had better results with another brand or certain clutch. Thanks

I have ran an EEP clutch on both of my trucks. I have used them on the street and for pulling. I had over 75+ hooks on my clutch before the first rebuild. It would of lasted longer if I would not of slipped it so hard trying to light a big single. Many people run SBC and they are a great clutch too.

That is a problem i have also. I run a pretty big single and have to slip a good bit to get it lit off the line. But hopefully with adding more RPM, it will help with that problem?

Kenny'sMachine.com... He's got a triple disk that fits in the stock bellhousing. Also, PowerPartsEngineering.com has about the same thing. Just another couple of options...

I have a buddy that was running and pulling the SB 3650 and it hold to around 75 pulls, but It went through a good bit of abuse because it was the clutch he learned to pull with. He is now running the Iron giant for SB. He hasn't pulled with it yet. I was running that same clutch in a former ford truck I was pulling with, but I traded it for my 06 CTD, I pulled the 3650 out of the ford and it still looked great. I went through about 40 pulls before I got rid of the truck.

i didn't know there were any other pulling clutches besides haisley. i had their street puller it was awesome for the street and pulling

Check into how many are SFI approved! Also what class are you looking to be in. Some clutches have an SFI Flywheel but not pressure plate. I am running a Haisley Comp Puller and really like it and drives good on the street (not the best for racing though) and my brother drives one of there Street Puller clutches... both are great clutches! There is no noise after the first while like some other clutches. At the start there will be a screach when dissengaging but thats just the steel on steel and it will get quite... Van recomends a few big smokey burnouts or pulls to heat everything up... then it will be good!!!

PS: do a search under my name and you will find quite a few posts about dual disks!

Hey thanks for the info guys. Still not sure what route to go though. Still debating on a big dual disc or just going with the triple? I was told Kenny's Machine makes a really nice triple disc. Plus i know just about everyone either has one or is coming out with a triple also.

What mods do you have on the truck and what class are you getting into? I would think that Super Street is where most guys would even start thinking about a tripple disk... I built a truck for the Super Street class and only went with the dual disk... Haisleys said that there clutch is fine for the power I was going to throw at it with my engine/pump mods.

I was just looking at the PowerPartsEngineering.com site and that 3 disk clutch is a 10. 5" clutch where Haisleys triple is a 13" clutch and same with there dual. I bet Haisleys dual has almost as much surface area as that tripple.

I know the guy who runs Power Parts, and i would not buy anything from him anyway. A buddy of mine got a clutch from him, and it broke a few days after install, and he charged him to replace the plate and it took like a week to get it. But that is my opinion and experience. Others may love them.

And i am currently not done with my mods, but i am planning to be around 750-800+ HP. The reason i was debationg on the triple, is because i have a large single that is fairly hard to get lit. I want something that is going to hold up to being slipped a fair amount, without having to be rebuilt all the time. I am just not sure what route to take.

I know the EEP clutch holds up pretty well. And my current SOuthBend seems to be doing fine as well. I have never drove or known anyone with a Haisley clutch, but i hear good things.

So let me know what you guys think or what you all would do.

Thanks guys, Travis
